Derby extra vs. Derby Premium

In your honest opinion. What is the difference between these blades. I have seen derby extra in alot of top ten lists but never have I heard or seen anyone reference derby premium yet they cost more. Thoughts?

All I know is the premium was one the worst blades I’ve tried.

The extra while being on the dull side at least don’t feel scratchy and harsh. In the right aggressive razor can be very smooth.

The premium on the other hand is a broken glass.

My experience of course.

You can frequently find Derby Premium for the same price or slightly less than Derby Extra. Safety Razor Place on eBay will happily sell you a 100 pack of Premiums for $7 if you buy a few at the same time.

My thought is there's a lot of competition at the $7-$10 range, and Derby blades are on the lower end of performance to me. That said, if someone likes them, great. They are certainly usable in my book.

Derby Premiums were...ok to good, not great. I'll never shave with a Derby Extra again. I tried many times to like them because they did show up on lists of "best blades" and they were awful in every razor over many years.

A pretty good discussion from back in November:

Hmmh…

Am I asking too much when I ask for a blade that is gentle AND sharp?
I have found quite a few, but it seems Permabrands can only do one at the expense of the other (or some middle of the road compromise).

I do remember a time about 17 years ago when the Derby Extra was AFAIK the only Derby DE blade and was quite popular at that time. IIRC, it occupied the middle ground that Astra blades cover now.

I moved on to other, sharper blades and when I looked up Derby a few years later they had largely fallen out of favour. It is rare today to find someone who swears by them.

allegedly they made derby sharper not too long ago.

Lol, I just received a Razorock Mission today from Italian Barber. A tuck of Derby Extras was included. I wonder if there is more to be inferred than just Derby blades are cheap.

thats crazy both razors I bought from italianbarber came with zero blades. Not that I expected it at the price they charge for razors but still.

Yeah this was the first time I remember blades were included in a RR razor order. The box was a bit worse for wear. 🤔 Maybe this was their way of making up for it.

I wouldn't have complained. I don't ever resell my gear so I don't need pristine packaging. And other than a Rex and an OliWorks razor, all my razors cost under $100, so I don't even much care if they weren't machined perfectly.

dont even get me started about the "O" word. which rex do you have?

An Envoy and an Envoy XL. I'm eyeing the Ambassador.
I just got the ambassador because overall the design is very efficient and I knew that I wouldn't be shaving on any setting over 2.5 probably. I shave on 1 and just do one pass and it takes down all my hair. Of course I go in different directions mapping out my beard but that is the way he designed the razor. To be a 1 pass razor for people who have sensitive skin and course hair. Anyways I wouldve loved to just get the envoy but since its supposed to mimic setting 3 on the ambassador I passed. I love 3 piece razors though. Easy to break down and clean. But the ambassador is not difficult to use either. I do like 2 piece razors aswell. And its really solid performance and easy to use the dial. Its definitely a keeper for me. Extremely efficient. If you have tough whiskers but want a mild shave this works. Also the feedback noise it gives is incredible. Its the loudest feedback I have heard from any of my razors when it takes down hair. Like most people who make videos have a nice microphone to pick that up on other razors. This thing just loudly and satisfyingly takes down hair but Im sure you get that feedback from the envoy too. 1 is just a nice no blade feel setting though. Maybe I could turn the setting up with a derby extra blade lol

I've used the Derby Premium in my DE89 and it was a really nice shave. It is less than screaming sharp but still cut quite nicely. The best part was that when I was done, it didnt feel like I had just shaved...zero burn or irritation. However it was only good for 2-3 shaved.
