This is a 22mm knot set at 46mm loft. It is fairly gelled and treated, so it gets stiff when dry, and it is pretty soft on the skin. It is dense and comfortable with solid backbone. I find it quite similar to Simpson's Manchurian, but denser, with more backbone, and a little bit more gelled. I have the same knot in a bulb set in a C40, and I like that one a little better. My two band knots probably rank something like this:

Shavemac D01 Fan
DSC Manchurian 2 Badger
Boti SMF Bulb
Yaqi 2 Band
Simpson Manchurian
Boti SMF Fan (too flat)
Shavemac D01 Bulb (nice hair, but a little too pointy)

I also really like the Boti SHD Black Badger. It is my favorite black badger knot, ahead of Omega, Semogue, and DSC. I have one of the Boti natural three band knots on the way, and I am looking forward to trying it. I generally like less processed knots with good backbone, fast on the soap, and some scrubbiness, but some days I reach for something softer.
Thanks for your impressions

I agree with you... the same thing for me too, it depends on the day and the length of the beard

Fine soap that I haven’t seen too much of lately. Sad that I hadn’t discovered them until just before they folded. LUST will be next month’s SOTM…

Today’s lineup - Commodore x3 - Best

Who manufactured the EDEL soap for Pasteur's Pharmacy? I love that soap. Thankfully I have 3 new unopened tubs after I bought my initial one last year.

What's the process to have them set the knot deeper for more backbone when ordering? Also do the knots all share the same hair length that is only shortened by setting it in deeper in the handle? How low can they go?

I set this one myself. If I want less loft, I drill the material out, and if I want more loft, I put silicone glue and coins in the hole under the knot.

When Rudy makes me brushes we always discuss it.

Hair length varies somewhat. Normally there isn't an option to special order the length you like. I know Rudy special orders the longest Shavemac knots he can get and likes to set them deeper in the handles, so if you get a brush from him with a Shavemac knot then you can have it tailored to your taste.

The Semogue knots have a set loft determined by their metal cup. They do use a few different depths, so, for example, if you want a tall 22mm knot, you can get a Galahad C3, and if you want a shorter one, you can get that in a Torga C3. Simpsons are also set at various depths by model like that.

Thanks. I generally like shorter lofts on all hair types, Boar/Synth/Badger. I also like my Torga boar more than my Galahad boar. Don't care for the floppy nature of that.

My first shave of BADGERary was a great one! I had around 7 days worth of growth to deal with as life kept getting in the way every time I had planned on shaving. Given that it's sunday, I slept in, had my coffee shortly after climbing out of bed. After a bit of relaxing it was time to jump into a nice warm shower to prep for my shave. Today's shave features:
  • APShaveCo Gelousy 22mm Badger
  • Lupo .58
  • New Nacet blade
  • Captains Choice Bay Rum
  • Alum block and Royall Bay Rhum to finish
We picked up a 3D printer for our son this year for Christmas and after a bit of searching I found a shave bowl that I wanted to try. I typically face lather with my 26mm Boar, but this brush is on the small side so I've been putting a heavy load on the brush, lathering until there's so much build up on the brush that it's about to fall off. Then I scrape it into the bowl for the 2nd and 3rd passes. I've tried lathering in it and then applying it, but I haven't dialed it in just yet.

The brush is rather crusty feeling when it's dry, but really softens up after it's loaded and on the face. Its definitely not as scritchy as my boar, but it is a very enjoyable brush.

I terms of the shave itself, the Nacet is THE blade for me in the Lupo .58. No tugging, no pulling despite the extra growth I had to deal with. I must be closer to getting this combo dialed in as this shave was extremely comfortable. I was even able to do a few small cleanup passes in the areas that typically give me trouble. By the end of it I was surprised at how little alum block feedback I had. The Royall Bay Rhum was about the same. VERY little feedback overall and I'm left with a close shave. Official review to be done later today when the Chief Shave Inspector returns home.
