Afterthoughts.
After using boar brushes throughout DecemBoar, I really enjoyed the experience, especially reading this thread. It made December feel even more special. My wife even got me an Omega 81151!

Here’s where my problems started: On January 1st, I went back to using my badger brushes, and I wasn’t disappointed. I instantly remembered why I switched from boar to badger all those years ago.

This morning, I took my badger brushes down from the shelf and gave them a try. My Omega 81151 created lather with ease, but applying it to my face felt like using a foam launcher (I know I’m to blame for this! 😅). Painting it on was difficult, it felt too long and clumped up. I switched to my Omega 48, which is nicely broken in, and it was much better. But I really do prefer my badger brushes. I also mostly face-lather, which is my preference.

This is why I’m wondering if something is off. I had no issues during DecemBoar, so I’m not sure what changed. I’ve been reading threads on how to use boar brushes and improve my technique, but I find myself feeling lost and a bit sad, while at the same time looking forward to the next DecemBoar!

Is it swell time?

Two things come to my mind. Your wife gave you the brush for Christmas and you used it a couple of tones during Decemboar after which you switched back to badger. Is that correct? I am assuming that you haven’t completed the break in period for this brush yet. That period can be shortened by the way if you take the road traveled by either John @JoWolf or Mark @BigAlVista.

Another thing that I myself find is that no matter how well my boars are broken in, if I don’t use them for some time the knots become really dry and really stiff again. Until I soak them in water, but the first use is usually a bit of back and forth to get it working again.

Longer lofted knots can always use a gentle combing out to keep them in correct order.
I switched to my Omega 48, which is nicely broken in
Fully broken in boar knots always load better and perform better than knots not completely broken in. A good robust hand towelling of the boar knot after use will bring it to a softer more flexible profile. A good quality fully broken in boar knot exceeds the softness of a two band Badger.
I really do prefer my badger brushes
If you are using silvertip badgers they will be softer than a great boar knot. However they do not possess the backbone of boar. Which can provide luxurious scrubbing.

All boar knots will always require a longer soak time than any other animal hair knots. As mentioned in Gudio’s comments when left for a longer period of time they will and do stiffen up slightly. A good long soak and a hand lathering before first use will bring the knot back into its full glory.

@Guido75
You are right, I should get the brush properly broken in. I'll try with a longer soak time today.

@JoWolf
You really have a point with the backbone of the boar, I really enjoy the "luxurious" scrubbing part of the brush. I mostly use silvertip badgers, and there isn’t that much scrubbing to get there :)

I was thinking about getting a Semogue (SOC) Boar and starting over, giving boar a good and fair try, I am not 100% locked in on the brush, ideas?

Thanks for the advice!

You may find my post on the SOC possibly interesting or helpful. I use boars exclusively and love them.

Getting past the break in window is critical. It will change your perspective on what a boar can be! Also the SOC is tops.
