B&B's Blade Bonanza - 2025 - Top-Tier Blades Edition

Blade Biter
I'm a bit late to the party but had a great first shave with the 7 O'clock blacks.

Even with my underperforming RFB, I managed a near BBS shave with very little aftershave feedback. There were even a few fleeting moments of effortless hair popping sensation. Certainly a sharp and relatively smooth blade.

First impressions, I'd tie it with the Nacet and ahead of Bic.

Shave #4 Gillette 7 o'clock Super Platinum

Yeah, this blade is too broken in to be used with a Black Tip to my liking. I had to buff a lot and I think my skin paid the price. Aftershave burning was prolonged and all over my beard area.

I could probably squeeze out another session inside an aggressive razor but this is getting binned because it is Vintage April.

I may or may not shave again with the Super Platinum so here are my thoughts. I suspect you gentlemen with older blades might have a blade that is sharper and perhaps ground differently than mine. I purchased mine within the last month or so off Amazon from RBC.

For me this is a good option in at least medium aggression razors and so long as I keep the shave count to <= 3. I find the per blade cost of $.30 a bit dear considering there are blades I prefer for significantly lower cost.

I did not evaluate the Wizamet, but these ranked below all the others for me, including the BIC, which is a departure I am sure from most everyone participating. Again I think you all probably have something different from me.

Are these the same as Indian Astra SPs? I can't say with certainty without a direct head-to-head trial, but they definitely are more alike to me than not. I do like Astra SPs for the record, but my expectations for them are tempered by the much lower price.

For today's Bonanza shave, I went with an Overlander and a Chiseled Face Legacy. What a lovely pair of razors - and a great matchup for the Black Ninja. Both shaves were nice and close, with 1.5 passes to BBS- goodness. No facial impact...almost no alum sting with the Overlander, and just a touch with the Legacy.

I shaved a fortune
The next blade up is the Feather..... I'm not sure about this one. I have a tuck included with a brush purchase years ago now.... I've been using my Vintage razors for April, but I don't have enough time in with any of them to determine if a Feather would be too much.... Or am I exaggerating their differences in my mind? I'm guessing the two sharpest blades I've ever used are the German Schicks and the BIC Astors...I've had no difficulty using them, in fact, I've enjoyed them. Would the Feather be "that" much sharper and end up being uncomfortable? Perhaps using one in one of my two NEW Techs might be the best bet... Either the Canada Pre-War or the England Flat Bottom Tech....

Notes:

A brilliantly smooth shave today with two monoliths in the shaving world.

Blades are still performing well. I am not too sure they will last as long as the Nacets from last week.

Kim, I'd give it a try in the tech... with a light touch. Yes, they are sharp, but they are are also well made - i.e. Predictable, once you get a feel for them. They are a fabulous one-and-done blade in a mild razor.

Feathers aren't all that scary. But use very light pressure...if I remember these blades correctly, they actually excel with lighter pressure, seems to just let that incredible edge do what it does best!

All your thoughts on the 7OC Blacks are really interesting. I am looking forward to circling back to them and trying them once I have some Feather shaves done next week.

I have 100 7OC Blacks in store so I must have liked them, but I seem to remember that most of my initial sample tuck got used up for shavette shaves. For that purpose, I really like them - sharp enough, but not so sharp as to be harsh if the technique should wander a little. My recollection is that in a DE they were a distinctly average one-and-done blade for me and I liked the green Indian 7OCs more. I certainly wouldn't rate them above a BIC as many of you fellas seem to, so I am really curious to see if revisiting them will change my mind - it wouldn't be the first time, as I have gone from being lukewarm on GSBs to considering them absolutely tops in the right razor. Perhaps I just haven't found the pairing for the 7OC Blacks yet...

Kim, FWIW, I learned to shave with a Merkur 39c and Feathers. No problem. It's one of a few blades I keep in bulk.

Yup, 34C and Feathers for me. They are sharp, but nothing to fear. Once the coating smoothes out they are just effortlessly smooth whisker whackers...although of course YMMV.

For today's Bonanza shave with the 7'Oclock Black, I went with a pair of Superslants, the 2++ and the 3++. Both razors were pretty smooth, but the 7OCB was not quite sharp enough for the 2++ to get beyond a DFS result. The first pass with the 3++ was outstanding, and that razor with a fresh 7OCB may be an excellent candidate for a 1-and-done shave.
