What's new

Atelier Durdan Fan Club

Didn't know they had a scale. Has that always been there a while or is it new? Looks new to me. Thanks for posting the link.

Edit : I just had a play around with it and it seems really cool. The numbers change on the amount of days between shaves. I selected 5/6 for skin and blade feel and then 6/6, 6/7, but depending on the the number of days, it changes them around a bit. If I do 6/7 with 2 days, it says 0.9 and past halfway of the + and closer to ++ for me.

What numbers have you selected to get your rating?

I'm definitely going to try taking advantage of the BF sales and get something, just trying to get it right the first time if I can.
I was all set on La Faulx ++ and maybe No. 7 1.1 (I'd been sitting on these numbers the past month with my own thoughts based on the description for each blade gap on the AD website). Have said that, I've been speaking to a couple of people the past few days, and they've suggested the + and either 0.7 or 0.9 if going with No. 7.

That's sort of making me rethink it as I'm a head shaver and maybe too aggressive might not work. I tend to do first pass with the grain, then the second and third pass both against the grain. At this point, I still usually have stubble on the back of my head, so I do more against the grain passes and buffing in certain spots. I don't want something that is too inefficient, but still want something that is comfortable for all those passes.
Sorry I haven’t had a chance to reply to your PM but I would suggest La Faulx + and No 7 0.9 for head shaving. Both of these will be very smooth yet efficient. If you like a little blade feel then the ++ and 1.1 may be more to your liking. I use the La Faulx ++ and No 7 1.1 but do have the 0.9 as well and it is not far behind the 1.1 but is a tad more gentle. Of course I only shave my face not my head. If your head skin is not sensitive you may be ok with the larger gaps.

My Vestige ++ gives fantastic shaves. I want to buy the La Faulx with a plate that gives shaves that are just as good.

Can someone compare the LaFaulx ++ and the Vestige ++ ... please tell me if they shave about the same?

A little advice will be much appreciated.

I have those. You want the ++ La Faulx it will be a little more efficient than the Vestige ++. I find the Vestige ++ to be in between the La Faulx + and ++.

I'm wondering if anyone has both classic and + plates and can compare them?

Looking at the AD chart the comfort/efficiency ratio of La Faulx classic and + is a little different to the Vestige. For the Vestige both plates are remarkably similar in smoothness.

@kopas I'd rule out ++ based on your last post. And I would find the classic lacking if limited to a single pass.

+ appears to be a safe bet but I did very much like the classic, however it's certainly mild (and a 3 pass shave for me).

I don't care for the Vector either in both metals. Vector was more efficient than the classic as you would expect.

I'm torn between classic and + (not getting both as I'm getting the Vestige + at the same time).

I have both the classic and + La Faulx plates and the difference feels pretty minimal to me, both in terms of feel and efficiency.

The + has just slightly more blade feel and is slighty more efficient. The final results seem about the same in terms of how close the shave is, with the difference being that the + just takes a bit more off on the first pass, but by the end of the second pass, the classic plate seems to catch up.

I use the classic plate more since I tend to like mild razor, but the + is pretty mild, too.

BTW, since you mentioned the Vector, I like it in its Lite form. The original Vector has too much blade feel for me.

I have the La Faulx OC and Vestige both in +++ Ultra and Le Maurice OC in 2.0, what is the purpose of a second DE from AD? How is it different than the Le Maurice? When was the No. 7 released? I bought all three of mine in the beginning of 2024 and just hearing of the No. 7 now?

I have the La Faulx will all plates except +++ and find the ++ the sweet spot for me. It’s smooth and efficient while being gentle on the skin. Definitely provides Blackbird results or better. I can use it daily with no problem. The Classic and + are good plates but dial back the efficiency too much for me.
Dialing it back is one thing. But are they still usable though? Don't know if you've tried the Paradigm SE but would you say that the Classic plate is a more efficient version?

I have never used the Paradigm and assumed it was a mild shave but your post seems to suggest otherwise. I'd listen to Augustin as he has tried both and I haven't.

It would appear that you are overshaving with the Paradigm. I would not keep any razor I couldn't use on a daily basis. The classic plate handled multiple days growth easily when I tried it.
Sorry for the confusion. The Paradigm is a mild shave. Given my slow growth though, it is enough for me to look presentable with only one pass. It's just that because my growth is also very coarse, it takes a bit of buffing with the Paradigm to get a shave that is beyond just presentable, which results in me over shaving kind you pointed out.

I don't know if it's my habit of doing only one pass with buffing instead of multiple single-stroke passes, but if the LF with the Classic plate is more efficient than the Paradigm, that would be interesting.

But looking at the AD chart, the Classic plate is considered bet close to the 0.3 plate on the No7. My friend has the 0.5 plate and says that it's kind a more efficient Overlander. The Paradigm SE is for sure more efficient than the Overlander. Which makes me wonder if the Classic plate is worth it.

But then again, I don't know if the AD scale reflects comfort level or actual efficiency. Does G9 one the scale mean high comfort or low efficiency?

Thanks. This is really helpful as I'm a mild razor person too.

It sounds in line with my expectations and somewhat similar to the Vestige classic and + experience.

I'm sure Augustin means the classic with multiple passes and his chart is bound to be subject to a dose of YMMV.

If I was uncertain I would go for + not ++ in your case.

The G|F (Gentle|Firm) scale is our measuring system ranging from G10 (very gentle) to F10 (very firm), allowing us to precisely characterize each razor.

G9 would suggest a super smooth shave. The Vestige classic is G10 and is crazy smooth (low efficiency). F relates to efficiency. At least that's how I'm reading it.

Not many have the Paradigm. There aren't alot in circulation.

Anyone heard of Ascender razors?
I hadn't and read about them this week.
They're apparently made by the guy that designed the Paradigm and they look really really nice. They're in the prototype stage but are supposed to be released soon. I believe Bullgoose will be selling them!

Yes, the Classic and + plates are most definitely serviceable. Lots here use thoughts plates with great success. The Classic plate may be the smoothest shave I’ve ever encountered. These two offerings are just not quite efficient enough to give me the shave I want without making 5 or 6 passes.

I have never used the Paradigm so I can’t compare.

I shaved a fortune
A kind gentleman here loaned me a La Faulx + base plate as I was curious. I used it twice I believe. I didn’t find it better for me than the Classic base plate. Bear in mind, please, I don’t need ultra efficiency. All of my top razors fit into that upper mild to lower medium efficiency range. The La Faulx classic is so good for me. I have a complete razor in bronze and a stainless steel razor head. I like it that much. I bought the stainless steel razor head only so I could bring it along on a 5 week trip... It's my "travel razor".... pretty funny to me too.... <eg>

I do a 4 pass shave... 2 XTG passes without relathering... just rubbing in extra soap from my left hand when needed. That might be one reason I don't need more efficient razors, though I was fine doing the regular 3 pass shaves as well.... I tried the XTG in both directions on a whim one day... and liked it, so I've continued the practice.

As always, YMMV, of course.
