Amakuni - first Tatara single-edge razor

* Update - stainless Amakuni cap = 5g, titanium Amakuni cap = 3g. And an additional discovery - they are not interchangeable. I suspected this from my Muramasa - even though they use precision CNC, there's still a lot of hand-fitting on Tatara's razors, which is a good thing. You can swap the caps, but on my two razors it results in a tiny and uneven gap at the back of the head (this is an n of 2, so it might actually work on different razors). Probably usable, and you might not even notice in a shave (I'm not going to try for a 2g difference), but it speaks to the precision these guys pursue in their products. Each cap is perfectly fitted to its own razor.

Interesting. Wolfman does this too and that’s why they never offered base plates separately. And I’m sure their machining tolerances are impeccable - just reinforces that there’s still opportunity for more precision fitting if a manufacturer makes the razor altogether and adds this step.

Something to be said for interchangeability, but that adds larger tolerances. In the firearms world, there are no "drop-in" parts for a $100k Holland & Holland or Purdey shotgun, but the added expertise of master engravers, woodworkers and precision gunsmiths adds to the cost. Arguably doesn't shoot - much - better than a $100 Remington pump, but it's a work of art in addition to being a firearm. Same could be said for some razors. :001_tongu And precision fitting in a razor could add to the shave...

Interesting but what about all those baseplates and caps they sell separately for the Masamune and Nodachi?

Wolfman does sell additional baseplates but perhaps both are matched to a single cap when ordering. I've had no issues switching parts on their razors from separate orders.

I think that may be a reflection of manufacturing adjustments on Tatara's part, and the fact that these have been in production for a long time, as well as perhaps a more simple design (a 3-piece cap is going to screw on even with a few fractions of a mm variance). Not so much with the multiple matching components of the Muramasa, or the very limited space on the Amakuni and the need for the magnets to precisely align. Just my guess..
