What's new

A birthday present for my future brother-in-law

It's a perfect razor to start with. Not only that but the TTO is really neat.
The TTO is a major reason why I like it and my slim. It's just a little cooler than all the other razors I have because of the mechanics.
And thanks again Cliff. I'll let you know how he likes it.

Throw him some more blades. That SS is in really good condition. He will be impressed.
I was thinking about it. You mean more types of blades right? I was thinking give him one type to work with awhile and then let him run through a few other types to try to find the blade for him. I was on the fence about whether or not to start him with a sampler.

Those 10 Astras should get him to the point where he knows what he likes and doesn't like about the blade. Talk to him about it, and get an idea for what blades you think he might want to try next, and follow up with a sampler pack. Might want to stress the importance of shave prep. Although I'm a relative newbie, I'm convinced a good razor and blade will give a lousy shave if there's bad prep work involved.

Yep prep is absolutely key! Went through the process from prep to lather to angle and (lack of)pressure. He ended up shaving and says its the closest shave he's ever had! Sounds like a success to me! Thanks for everyone's help here. Gonna let him run with it for a week or so and see how he likes it. Already told him of the forum and mantic's videos. I don't think I'll let him know that there is anything else out there he can use yet. Should just tell him he has the only tools that exist because he is awfully excited about it already. We'll see how long we can keep him off the AD's. :glare:

that's an awesome gift. Like the man said, hopefully he understands the beauty of a used vintage razor.
My sister in getting married and I love my brother in law so getting him a EJ full chrome set as a wedding gift. hopefully he likes it and takes the dive into wetshaving. he loves looking at my tools when he comes over.

Great gift!

I think KMF is a great cream. However, Proraso/Co Biggs is also great. Either way, both are cheap enough to learn how to make lather and not worry about all the money being wasted. Also pretty hard to mess up the lather...

+1 The TTO was what got me interested in old school wet shaving (OSWS?).

Yes give him variety and quantity. A sampler pack is great. I recently gave a close friend of mine a Slim, and a pack of Derby, Astra, Shark, Rapira, & Supermax each. He absolutely loves it. Previously he would shave with one Fusion cartridge for 2 months, getting crappy shaves.

It's a truly lovely starter kit and a great gift from you, Tyler! If you can, add some more DE blades trying to make a sample pack. :wink2:

Thanks Marco! That's very nice coming from a fella like yourself! I do have plenty of extras thanks to a sample pack and some generous gifts. I'm gonna give him a week or two and see how everything's going. Then either buy him a sample pack or make one for him. Actually I just ordered a 100 pack of lab blues so I'll have plenty of those to share with him.

Wow a slim is a great gift! I wish I had an extra because it's the reason I wanted to start. I'll have to work on picking up some more vintage SS's and slims so I can start making more kits. It was really great to be able to give a gift like that.

Kiss My Face shaving cream isnt designed to be whipped into a lather. The instructions don't at all mention use with a brush. I suppose you could apply with a brush like face lathering, but too much whipping will make it loose its slickness. I've tested this myself. I used this stuff for years with gillette sensors cartridges and still use it sometimes when traveling. Or like yesterday when I noticed I screwed up trimming my sideburns and needed just a bit of lather to even them out.

I think face lathering with it is great. It's thick, fluffy, and slick. But, as always, YMMV.

That looks like a good suggestion actually. It's too late for this one but
maybe for my next starter kit. Does it shave like an SS?(that's probably a dumb question)

Great starter kit though I think you may end up on lil sis's s*@t list when the new hubby's RAD kicks in. :biggrin1:

I have 2 mid 50's Super Speeds and grandpa's 1970 SS and I find the later the Super Speed the milder the razor bearing that in mind the Ming Shi I picked up for my dopp kit shaves on a par with grandpa's SS.
The only real complaint I have about my Ming Shi is that it seems a bit flimsy after shaving with vintage American iron (or brass if you will) since starting DE shaving.

Yes getting on her bad side was definitely a factor in my decision. Hopefully it doesn't end badly for me! :cursing:

That was one thing I was thinking about on the Ming shi. I figured for such a cheap price it might be a bit poorly made. But if it shaves like an SS at all then it'd be a good starter kit razor anyways. And locally available! I figure he'll likely catch the RAD bug eventually and end up with another razor(or 4).

It is true that it has no mention of a brush on the bottle but I will say that it whipped up quite well. Although I still have yet to shave with it, I will say that the hand lather test showed it to be slick enough IMO. I'll shave with it tonight and see how it preformed to bowl lathering and shave. If it doesn't shave well(because of the brush) then I wasted a few bucks. Shoulda bought another puck of Mike's :crying:
