2025 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Battlestar Galactica Year

@Bsamps
It’s a 86 with the grip and and original 87 octagonal handed down to me from my step gramps when he passed away some years ago. I had to chuck the original top cause it was getting pitted. Should’ve kept it in hind sight but didn’t make sense. Was so old it didn’t have the EJ logo on the head. Shaved so well for me I went and got some other EJs. I also have a chatsworth imitation horn I love as well with matching silver tip. Yes, they are probably the only razors I need.

You’ve got good taste in razors. I have a Chatsworth as well. Very nice razors, for sure.

Since last year's theme was MacGyver I had to break out the Swiss army knife for tonight's shave. Top left is an original Sturm blade.

Is this thread for people who have buying problems? i'm just curious. I went a while just using an electric Brio beard shaver / trimmer. I went through a spell of depression and got away from DE shaving for a while and was lucky sometimes to use the electric shaver once a week or even once every two weeks. i've snapped out of it and now back to daily shaving and feel so much better about myself. Being able to buy and try new scents, soaps, pre-shave stuff, blades, razors etc.. seem to keep me very interested.

Please nobody take my post wrong, i'm just curious if most people do this are the same people that have 30 razors, 30-40 tubs of soaps, etc, maybe lean n the side of compulsive buying or something? i'm just curious, I know I could not do it myself as I don't have that kind of willpower and don't have that much gear to go a whole year without buying shaving items.

Jim, I hope you do stay in for now.

… helped me whittle down my blades, soaps and aftershaves and compelled me to sell off and give away the bulk of my DE, SE, injector and straight razors. Due to an assortment of life changes, I came to the realization that quality and not quantity is what’s important to me. Life has taught me that it’s much to short to hoard.

This is where I’m at now. This is my first restraint of any kind. But I’ve been downsizing into a minimalist RV lifestyle for a couple of years now. It’s very therapeutic to downsize. Went down drastically from a couple hundred razors, dozens of soap tubs and splashes. Still have way too many thousands of blades. But it’s still a work in progress. I’m getting there!

When that runs out, I’ll do what Quaznoid does and use soap scraps from the shower.

I will never get to this point. I have debated against this practice in the past, and I don’t care to dredge that up again. But I can’t ever see myself using shower scraps to shave. But more power to those that do.

That would be a nice starter kit for some of us. 🤣🤣🤣

But in all seriousness, while some may have gone through fits of compulsive buying, in my case it was a matter of just accumulating massive quantities of shave stuff over years of buying and collecting. When a new soap came out that peaked my interest, I’d buy it without regard for how much I used, or didn’t use, of the last soap. When someone posted about a great blade, and I wanted to try it, I’d buy a hundred pack because it was cheaper per blade and perhaps more readily available. If I liked that blade, I’d eventually buy more so that I would have some stock for the future. And I would buy any razor that peaked my interest. Add to that all of the vintage razors I picked up at the flea markets or online. Over a long period of time that all added up to a massive pile of gear and softwares.

All of you are bringing up points why I should stay in and why I shouldn’t be in.

I now have a total of seven razors now in my den and that’s down from a high of approximately 70 razors as recently as 6 years ago. These sabbaticals have helped me whittle down my blades, soaps and aftershaves and compelled me to sell off and give away the bulk of my DE, SE, injector and straight razors. Due to an assortment of life changes, I came to the realization that quality and not quantity is what’s important to me. Life has taught me that it’s much to short to hoard.

So where am I going this year? My artisan soaps are done and I’m using the last of my Williams and VDH pucks this year. When that runs out, I’ll do what @Quaznoid does and use soap scraps from the shower. I have enough Aqua Velva to last me well into 2026 and around 700 blades to last me the rest of my life. You know what? I’ll still enjoy my shaves!

I love the camaraderie of this thread, I really enjoy the bantering and comments from everyone and want to stay in. However, I don’t want to water down the purpose of this thread or lead anyone down the path of treewhaling during a restock period.

So, if @Guido75 says I’m in, then I’m in!
Hi,

I say you are In as well. Mainly because you have not begun. For those who completed 24, 25 does not begin until the first two weeks pass. Those folks can buy as little or as much as they wish until such time as the restraint begins for them.

So, Jim is In.

As I mentioned, the idea is to sit and think about what you want and then proceed once you are sure. And, Jim has certainly done his homework. Pared down the collection nicely. And, then chose something to add wisely. He gets a Gold Star. Well, a Gold Battlestar this year. :)

Is it swell time?

This is at least some of my reasons to join and be in. And I think I am still playing in the minor leagues compared to some. My mind is strong, but the flesh sometimes weaker. I like were I am at the moment though and restraints like these help me to persist. Because I know I can stay away from buying. I could have resisted my buys 9 out of 10 times. It’s just that at those times I consciously decided to buy. That is what I want to see through to the end: having the same determination skipping the buying part.

Thanks for visiting by the way! Feel free to check in now and again.

Cheers,

Guido
