Homemade brush - Knot setting question

Quick question re cutting the 'hole' for the knot - should my internal shape be straight or wider at top to account for the spread of the bristles, or straight?

Hugely exaggerated example:



As the knot i'm trying to set (28mm) is quite a lot wider once the resin plug stops..

Every commercial brush that I've dissected for reknotting so far has been straight.
