Haslinger Schalfmilch vs. MWF

CzechCzar

Use the Fat, Luke!
Haslinger, and it’s not even close.

I have a puck of mwf that’s been unused since I gave up on it.

MWF:

Is expensive
Has a breakable container that is too big for the soap
Depends on exogenous factors such as the weather, who won the last football game, to decide whether it feels like lathering properly
Even when it does lather properly, it is an underwhelming lather
Leaves a gross tacky skinfeel
Collaborates with the enemy

Contrast this with Haslinger:

Can take as much water as you can throw at it. Lathers better and better each shave. It doesn’t care if you give it a lot or a little water.
Is cheap
Mildly scented so it doesn’t clash with aftershave
Is made by one dude
Conditions the skin so well you don’t really need aftershave
No frilly nonsense container

1. Grater
2. MWF: One Puck
3. Haslingers: One Puck
4. MWF container

Grate and press into MWF ceramic = Mitchell's Haslingers Wool Schalfmilch Fat. Nirvana.

...MWF...expensive...
I prefer Haslinger too, but I think the price of MWF is pretty much commensurate with its size/weight: MWF 125g, Haslinger 60g.

...Haslinger...made by one dude...
Are you sure about that? The soap factory has been around since 1890, and it's huge in size, for a one-man operation. Also, FWIW, per their website, they incorporate "current laboratory tests" and a "quality management system."

Andreas Haslinger told me twice in two different responses that the shaving soap is made by one individual in their Vienna location but not to worry because they have a backup always in place! Just love this soap....Here's one of his responses:

"Just some quick info about the company that might interest you, as I read
people wondering whether we are an artisan company or a big austrian
manufacturer....we are actually a small family business started by my
grandparents that has been running for 66 years. We have 7 production
employees and only 1 of them specialized purely in the soap production.
Although the manufacturing process has been modernized from the artisan soap
making method, it is still a very hands on production....from finish till
end (when soaps are packaged and sent to customers).

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write to us! It means the hard
work is paying off!"

Best,
Andreas Haslinger

Interesting. Thanks much, for shedding light on the matter, @vtmax!
It seems Haslinger is sort of in the same vein (in terms of operation size) as Klar Seifen - not as big as Tabac, but more employees than the typical wetshaving artisan.
In any case, they're certainly doing something right! :)

So, I broke down and bought some MWF and some extra pucks of Schalfmilch last night. I plan on doing a head to head comparison.

Is it all Haslinger soaps that are top performers?
I can't say, since I've only tried the Schalfmilch. I love lanolin soaps and it's their only one that contains it. I've heard equally good things about their other scents, though. That being said, I've only been using the Schalfmilch for two weeks now and, barring MWF possibly outperforming it, I think I've found my "forever soap". It's honestly so good that I'm about to sell off all my other soaps. No kidding.

That is so cool. Thanks for sharing that. I just ordered my first puck and hope to know what all the fuss is about by next week.

Probably around the same size company.
Haslinger, Czech & Speake/Valobra, and maybe Mike's for an artisan, is really all I need for top quality soaps these days.

It is definitely going to be next on my list! I have to use up my other soaps firs though before my wife kills me. No kidding.
