I think some authors are cute and some are pretty goobery looking. Examples:
Good
Bad
Some makers seem to ignore the flow of the shape. What's appealing about the shape is the smooth rounded flow of the lines from the tapered stem into the charming bulb of the bowl.
I actually really like the shape, but it has to be from the right maker. The 320 is nice looking, but a bit too "chubby" for me. I am craving a tinsky author right now, not really in the cards though.
Agree on the Author shape. A little too bulky and heavy for my tastes. A similar shape that I do like though is the Prince.....like
an Apple shape with a slight bend in the stem. Much lighter weight makes it easy for clenching, smaller bowl makes it easier to load too, IMO.
I have a WWII era Kaywoodie 13B Supergrain Author (Made without a stinger due to wartime critical metals shortage) that is very lightweight and easy to clinch, obviously smaller than most modern renditions. Looks like this: http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/kaywoodie-kindness-13b-author
