Gettting rid of tape residue

Any and all of the above methods work. I use the tape I just took off, easiest way IMO, nothing to spray, go get.

Or you can forgo the tape all together

Yes, especially if one uses a bit of pressure. But for that I either use multiple layers of cellophane tape or usually electrical tape. Once the bevel is set, I go over to cellophane and re-set the bevel angle and that really takes very little honing. 5 micron of finer is not a problem with cellophane tape and I have never had to go beyond 1 micron film to re- hone a razor after the bevel was set anyway.

Wouldn't scotch tape get tore up really fast on low grit hones?

Think you have your answer already, but I just use a spot of the gun oil on a tissue, that I use on my razors anyway.

I use tape. Takes about two to three seconds and it's already in your hand. If use acetone, avoid contact with celluloid scales.
