Mixing inks?

After a reminder that Private Reserve and Noodler's inks may not be "vintage pen friendly", I'm wondering if I can recreate some of my favorite inks by mixing inks.

Background - I like dark inks, both because I can use them at work and because they are easier to read, for me. I really like Private Reserve's Black Magic Blue/DC Electric Blue/Ebony Green and Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses (that one is probably not duplicable, I would think).

If I take a purple/blue/green ink and add a drop or two of black to a mL of base ink, how much will that affect the overall color besides darkening it? Is there a black that is better than others for mixing (same brand as the colored ink)?

I'm assuming that people mix up around 3-4 mL's of mixed ink in those tiny sample bottles that you get from Goulet Pens (if you have some), as opposed to an entire bottle . . .
