Gillette Single Rings with British Patent Numbers

Hi Adam,

I have entered your razor into the Wiki. Thanks for the contribution.

This morning I visually compared a 1905 US made SR with a 1908 SR made in Europe and could see no difference in the construction of the knobs.

Enjoy your razor.

Cheers, George

Hello George,

thank you for checking the differences and the databse entry. Cleaned up the razor completely, it is amazing how thick the silver plating is.

Hi Alex,
Thank you for your kind remarks. When I joined this forum as a know-nothing noob you were already a senior member held in high regard. It is I that have learned, and continue to learn, from you. Thank you my friend.

Hello,

reporting for duty. This one came in a No. 88 box from France.
Data:
silver plated, thin cap
patent no.: on upper lip of inner barrel, BR.PAT. No. 287 middle part unreadable 02
date code: located on lower part of outer barrel, E 291160
Gillette logo: double, top cap logo is 1,5 cm in width, combed plate logo is 1,8 cm, interesting, imho.
Star or any other marking: no

Hello again,

some interesting things going on.

E 291160 is to the left, E 115098 to the right.
E 291160s barrel is noticeably shorter, also locating studs are more shorter and "stumpy".
There is also a minor weight difference of 3 g. If I see correctly, E 115098s neck piece and inner barrel are made from thinner tubing than E 291160.

Hello, George and all the honourable members!

I have got some SRs and there might be an English SR among them. Of course, Edgar saw it first and pointed me to you!

The razor comes from France.
The case does not match a US SR from what the E number might mean, 1917.
Serial number E 116205 on guard plate top.
PAT.NOV.15.04.N on outer barrel.
G in D on guard plate down.
Gillette diamond logo on head cap (down).

Below you have some (rather awful) photos. The razor is not cleaned up, yet.

Is it an English made SR? For the French market?

According to this chart

http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Gillette_England_Dating_Information

This razor might fit among the first listed, but the serial number doesn't.

Thanks, gentlemen!

Hi Adam, Juan and Edgar,

I am very time poor at the moment, but from a quick look at the razors they both appear to fit into the category which is under investigation. The size differences pointed out by Adam would not be inconsistent with my theory that the first was made in the converted Gordon's boot factory while the new factory was under construction, and the second made in the new factory using the new manufacturing protocols. Keep up the good work guys. Hope to have some more time available soon.

Cheers, George

I haven't been here in a while... here's the info on mine:

Serial number F018558 on top of guard plate.

BR.PAT.No.28763.02 on outer barrel.

No logos or branding anywhere.

I found it here in England and the box has the older script logo inside.
