I nailed three in a row last week.

Merkur 34C
Crystal blade
Escali brush
Col Conk bowl
Crabtree & Evelyn or Proraso green soap
Clubman aftershave

Prep was a 10-minute shower while the brush was soaking in hot water, and a film of water on the soap.
Give brush 2-3 good shakes then load for about 45 seconds.

I don't think I use enough product to ever get a lather-porn worthy amount, I usually just build enough lather to fill the brush and have enough left for three passes.

Shave was WTG, XTG, GTX with touch ups under my jaw and on my chin. Cold water rinse and a Clubman splash.

I found myself faceturbating most of the morning (switching hands and alternating between slow, light rubs and a light slapping method :w00t:)

But alas, I seem to have lost my groove. I went to the Gillette 7 O'clock yellows in my sampler and my next two shaves had some weepers and numerous rough patches. Next up on the list is the Personna Reds.

Why not just stick to what is working for you, and when you master your technique go into blade experimentation.

I've had a couple so far now that I've gotten my new razor in. Was using an old tech from a sampler that was tearing me up pretty good. Ordered the razorock slab and have been having ace shaves with varying combos. The best of which has been;
Hot towel for five minutes
Art of shave pre-shave oil
Wolf Whiskers boar brush
Mama bear dragons blood soap
Razorock SLAB razor
Feather blade (2nd use)
Two passes wtg, xtg
Cold rinse face
Alum block, no sting at all
Wait five minutes cold rinse, dab dry
Pinaud clubman after shave splash

Didn't need the third pass for what I felt was dancing a fine line on bbs.

My other ace was essentially the same, but no pre shave oil, razorock classic, Astra sp, three passes with the last being atg.

And you did XTG with no issues?

Hit a few home runs since picking up a 48-50 super speed on the bay last week... Product & prep have been identical:

Hot shower

EJ best badger (quick rinse)

Combination of EJ sandalwood soap & cream

Gillette silver blue blades

Clinique post shave healer

Clubman AS

Shaving with only 2 passes needed: N - S, then S - N, and a little touch up needed on the neck...

And you did XTG with no issues?

Yes... Or, rather, I was able to yesterday. Lol. Got some irritation today going xtg. The feather was the best bet for me for my tech, but looks like the search is still on for my Slab. I think I'll try persona reds tomorrow am and see how those do. If I'm only getting one ace day out of three, I'll probably need to move on. It probably also means that this pre shave isn't all is cracked up to be for my face.

I started on a Merkur HD and got OK shaves, a little blood and irritation but nothing special

Used it for a few months

I bought a red tip SS on ebay and the result was little less blood and a lot less irritation.

Used it for a few months

For fun I tried switching back to the HD

Aced it.

My prep isn't even that special compared to some I've seen

Gear:
Merkur 34C HD
Feather blade
FS best badger brush
Small steel bowl, 8 cm diameter
TOBS sandalwood soap
Bulldog face cream

Sorry for the detail level. I had to go all in ;-)

Prep:
Wet the soap and leave a little water on it
[Optional]Hot shower
Wet face with warm water
Soak brush under warm tap water for 20-30 seconds
Squeeze brush
Pour soap water in bowl
Load brush
Lather in bowl, gently at first so as not to spill the water
Scrubbing face with lathered brush for 15-20 seconds
Paint face to even out the lather
WTG pass
Rinse face in warm water
A few drops of water in the bowl
Quick relather
Scrubbing face with lathered brush for 15-20 seconds
Paint face to even out the lather
XTG pass
Rinse face in warm water
A few drops of water in the bowl
Quick relather
Scrubbing face with lathered brush for 15-20 seconds
Paint face to even out the lather
ATG pass
Rinse face in warm water
Squeeze brush to get out rest of lather
Lather with hand
Touch ups
Cold water rinse
Apply alum block
Clean and put away gear
Cold water rinse
Dry off and Bulldog face cream

Result:
Irritation free BBS FTW!!

I love the 2 pass stories, for me it is an intense process, knowing the you only have two shave passes to get it done......

Wow, a ACE shave with all those steps, that is amazing:thumbup:

I surprised myself with an ace shave today.

I have difficult skin and a tough beard. i used to get a lot of ingrown hairs before i started DE shaving.

I've been struggling with Shark blades in a couple of razors, including my Goodfella. Hot shaves were dreadful so i switched to cold shaves, which were going much better. But by yesterday my face was still looking a bit ragged. I persevered with my routine, and at the last minute loaded a fresh Shark into a Schick Krona. This Krona has provided ordinary shaves in the past, but this morning with a Shark and cold water it worked a treat and delivered the best shave i've had yet.

Evening before the shave:
Exfoliate {I use Skin Food exfoliating stuff}
Apply a balm or moisturiser

Shave day:
Shower and wash face
Rinse face with cold water
Lather up with cold water (EJ aloe vera)
First pass WTG
Rinse with cold water and lather up again
Second pass XTG
Rinse with cold water
Warm face with a hot towel
Air dry
Apply balm (Haslinger sandalwood or goodfella)

Simple as that, and i can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

Warm shaves are great too, but it's a whole different routine.
