What's new

The MMA Thread

I think dominant performances over Nate Diaz, BJ Penn, Jake Ellenberger, Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley and a mixed martial arts record of 18-2 is more than enough to earn a title shot.. I highly doubt it is in favour of creating a new Canadian superstar.

I agree.

UFC is hugely popular in Canada right now and is just getting bigger. They could announce an event in any one of the major cities for tomorrow night and not include a single Canadian on the card, and the tickets would still sell out before breakfast tomorrow morning. No reason to cater to the Canadian crowd, we're already watching anyway. Rory is at the point where he deserves a title shot.

Renan Barao has been matched up against Mitch Gagnon. I'm not familiar with Gagnon, but he's currently ranking 15th, which is the last ranked fighter in UFC rankings. Can't imagine Barao would get a shot with beating him. I gues the UFC is still mad at him over missing that last fight. I'm excited for Cruz getting the title. He may get his belt back. Looked outstanding in his last fight.

Pardon my language, but son of a!!!

Cain Velasquez injured again. Mark Hunt will now face Fabricio Werdum for the interim HW title. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing that fight. These guys have to train smarter, all these injuries are ruining the divisions.

I also think that interim titles mean nothing. To me, it's just a #1 contender fight

Even with his suspension lifted, he's gotta be done at this stage, doesn't he?

Too bad about Cain and agree with the Intern Belt...it doesn't mean much.

I'm glad to see the mark removed from Cung Le's record, but I hope he does retire. He took a beating from Bisping. Bisping is always crisp and very good, but you normally don't see him turn someone's face into chopped liver. I think it's time Cung hung up the gloves.

I'm more excited for Hunt vs Werdum than I am Cain vs Werdum. I don't find Cain very dynamic, very good, but I am never excited to watch him. Mark Hunt is just fun. If he lands a few shots, he can put Werdum down, but if it does go to the ground, he's sunk.

what a fight between aldo/mendes. Aldo has a CHIN on him, to survive those uppercuts from mendes is crazy.

Phil davis, i just don't like the way he fights. Lay and pray like a sob. It's a damn fight man, hit your opponent!!

I thought it was BS thst elkins beat martins, he did the wall & stall the whole fight.

besides Fedor in his prime, i think that Cain is probably the most dynamic HW out there right now. He can strike very well, and wrestle, has insane cardio for a HW. I just wish he would focus on his submissions. So many times Kongo had his neck out and cain never went for it. What is it about cain that you don't like?

I think that JDS beats most HW's right now. Except for Cain.

THE only thing that cain has against him is injuries, stay healthy damn it. i have no clue how coaches/trainers can't keep the elite guys injury free!

Main event was entertaining even with the myriad of Goddard miscues. I would watch a third match.

I view Davis like any other specialist. He does what it takes to put himself in a position to win. I enjoyed the match. I thought Glover would have been better on the ground. Phil mauled him.

Not a fan of Phil Davis either. Reminds me somewhat of Okami.

Aldo Mendes was a great fight. I thought he KO'd mendes at the end of the round.

What do you guys think of all the noise Connor is talking?

Agreed, the Main Event was fast and furious. Lots of pokes, low feet and apparently low feet. And that post buzzer double punch was ridiculous.

Davis did what he had to do, to win..and he did. But it was a boring fight and showed that Texteira has some work to do and learn to get back up or prevent the take down.

Did Davis just call out Anderson?

Agreed, I think Mendes was really hurt after those punches. I also didn't see it a 49-46 fight, it was closer then that to me.

Connor is a goof, but he knows how to get in the news and create a buzz. He doesn't deserve a title shot yet and Seaver may surprise him, he's a fire-hydrant and very strong at that weight class and has whicked kicks.

conor can keep talking. I'm still not impressed. Dos Santos landed the same punch on cain and look how the two fights after that turned out. I still think Poirier beats him.

Anyone catch UFC Fight Night Downunder? An entertaining card that offered plenty of finishes. No spoilers but I absolutely loved the co-main events. One outcome was surprising and one was one was not but both were excellent.

Last nights fights were on fight pass, so I didn't see them.
I'm excited for tonights fights!
Glad I checked. I didn't even know there were.

Edit....I HATE FIGHT PASS, looks like we don't get this one up here in Canada on TV :cursing:

Missed last night's fights because of fight pass. I have to go out tonight, but I'm hoping to get back in time to at least catch Shogun. Looks like McCall's fight has been scrapped.

Weren't we sticked a while back?

Anyway, last nights fights were very entertaining. All finishes on the main card.

Al Iaquinta upset Pearson and put on a great fight. Rockhold plowed through Bisping and glad he finished him. Bisping was complaining, whining and constantly chattering to Herb Dean about stuff. He got him to the ground with strikes/kicks then finished him with a choke.\

Bisping was classy in the interview, until he dropped an F-Bomb.

I just watched the Shogun/OSP fight.

my reaction as shogun fell...

Followed by tears of sadness.

Shogun has to be done now..very sad to see it end like that.

Overall, a terrible card to watch. Nothing exciting, nothing I even remember, not even close to as being as entertaining as the previous Fight Night card with Bisping/Rockhold.

Not sure why, but I didn't like OSP going in and dislike him even more now and here's why...You're in Brazil, fighting a legend and are dancing around like a funky chicken after the win. Whereas you take Rockhold who choked out Bisping and didn't even raise his hands but helped Bisping up and made sure he was ok.
