WW2 movies...name the better ones

ok....I am going out on a limb here but "The Best Years of Our Lives", granted it is technically a POST WWII movie but not by much. A classic story of what happens to heroes when the war is over and life begins again. The struggles they face in readjusting really makes you think about what our brave men and women do for us day in and day out and how they have to deal with people when they come back.

Sorry for me being so simple, but for a split second I actually did read "S*h*aving Private Ryan"

I once heard the director John Waters announce that he was going to make a version of the film that had a title much like that. Except with the words in a different order.

how about air force, command decision, wing and a prayer, edge of darkness, objective burma, gung ho, guadalcanal diarey, manilla calling, pride of the marines, destination tokyo battan, back to bataan, the fighting seabees, they were expendable.

Although he world famously refused to accept it, citing a dislike of the voting and even the actual concept of a acting competition. He was the first actor, though not the last, to do so (Marlon Brando would, two years later, decline his Oscar for The Godfather in 1973).

The film also won 5 additional Academy Awards Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Art Direction.

It was mentioned earlier, but I want to show support for:

Letters from Iwo Jima

I finally got around to watching this movie just last week and was very much happy with the decision.

I'm surprised that Stalag 17 hasn't made into this thread yet.
I rather have liked it when it appears on AMC

Topgumby mentioned it. It's one of my favorites. My list was very short (but Frank Sinatra is very cool) because all my favorites (at least the ones that I consider great movies) were already mentioned.

If somebody was to make it a point to watch all the flicks mentioned in this thread that they haven't seen, it would be an entertaining run of films.

I think I'll do just that.

A Bridge Too Far . . . even if just for the parachute jump scene.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Catch-22, about the less than heroic aspects of the war.

Comedies also, such as Operation Petticoat.
