1854, Dutch politician, civil engineer, and visionary Cornelis Lely was born on September 23. We owe him the "Afsluitdijk".
 
The 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, under orders from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, went into action on this day in 1957. They were protecting the rights of nine students to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
 
1944, September 26 - one bridge too far; operation Market Garden fails, which leads to the "hunger winter" in Holland.
 
On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress authorizes construction and administration of the first American naval force—the precursor to the United States Navy.
 
Oct. 17, 1905: faced with open revolt throughout the entire country, Tsar Nicholas II issues a proclamation that promises to enact sweeping political reforms, including the establishment of the Russian Duma, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly. These reforms bought the Tsar another 11 years, before the party finally ended.
