The first voice controlled Alexa was actually called Alex.

But close to the reality of that time.

The earliest TV remote controls in the 50s were a field-installed accessory by TV repair shops. They would come out to the house and install them into the sets. The first controls weren't much smaller than that ashtray. The very first ones had a cable running to the set. The wireless ones followed shortly later.

Interestingly, all the first ones to get them were older people, with no children left in the house.
