Hoshi Tombo

We're on a family vacation in Japan this week, visiting my daughter and her husband who is stationed in Yokosuka. We were walking about on what Americans call Blue Street when we saw an old junk shop with hunting knives and survival gear in the windows. There was barely enough room to walk in, but we thought there was a chance they would have some old razors.

The word for shaving in Japanese is "soru," and razor is "kamisori." The old woman behind the counter understood, and brought out a razor immediately - it cost about as much as an eBay Fatboy.

When we got it home and took some pictures, you can see - it seems to have acrylic scales, never been honed, asymmetric grind, and an imperfect stamp. It's a 6000 series. At first we had a hard time identifying it because the Hoshi Tombo logo was missing its lower half- the dragonfly didn't have the star to rest on (as you can see in the pictures).

Can anyone please help us identify what time period this comes from? Who makes it and where can you find them today? There's not much information online about Hoshi Tombo razors, so anything you can tell us would be very helpful!

Thank you in advance for any information! Enjoy!

What a fantastic razor! I love my Hoshi but it doesn't get much action and is more a cool piece to have.

I don't know anything about their history but I've owned a few. I sold doubles of the #8000 and #8500. I didn't keep the lone #4000 that I had.
