I'm really enamored with Boker's new abalone scaled SR, but couldn't bring myself to pay $350 for it. So I decided to try making my own! They're not perfect, but they work for me.
I had some green acrylic scales I'd gotten from etsy that I wasn't thrilled about. I filed them down to about 1/16 inch thickness. I purchased a sheet of green abalone veneer, scaled and stuck them to the rough side of the acrylic, then cast it in epoxy. Clipped and filed them down to a rough shape, then sanded and polished up to 5k grit.
There are a few bubbles and pits in the epoxy, and the veneer cracked in a few places. Still, I think its beautiful to look at everytime I walk into the bathroom.
Speaking of which, I'd love to see other creative ways folks are displaying their SRs! I'd been considering buying or making a stand, but Godzilla is hard to beat.
Cheers!
