Getting nicks and bumps from DE89, razor recommendation?

That's your answer. Your face was adapted to daily shaves and could handle it. It doesn't like you doubling the time between shaves.
That seems like a pretty reasonable theory.

At minimum, I would move up to sharper/less tuggy blades.

With time your skin and beard may have changed. Revising your technique and kit may be in order.
 
FWIW --

A long time ago, I read that bumps may be caused by hairs that are cut below skin level, and then curl back under the skin and become infected.

. . . Have you tried _not_ aiming for a very close shave -- just "socially acceptable", rather than BBS ?

That would leave the ends of your beard hair above the skin, and reduce the infections that show as bumps.
