Beard hair thickness - does shaving affect it?

my dad was a dermatologist and would often say that shaving doesn't thicken your beard, it merely takes the hair tip away so there's a stubbly feel -- he also said that eating chocolate doesn't cause acne (just in case you were wondering about that) He said they are both examples of post hoc, ergo procter hoc.

I understand the technical explanation of this, but to me it's less impactful than the practical effect. My whiskers still appear to be thicker when I shave more often, whether they really are or not.

I mean, think of it this way: Is a magic trick any less entertaining just because you know it's an illusion?
