007 movies

Good thread!

However, since Bond is now dead (RIP-2002) the more appropriate question would be: who "was" the greatest Bond villain, etc.

and it was...Jaws, or Red Grant.

Do you mean villain or villain's main henchman. For example is it Goldfinger or Odd Job that qualifies?

For those detractors of QoS...view it again. I think the Tosca scene may be the best scene in Bond film history. Remove the airplane scene and it is a top-notch Bond film.

It closes the door on the story of CR and opens the door into the future enemy...an excellent way to continue the re-boot of the series and the character.

The main way, though, that I know it was good is that I have this friend who pretty much gets everything wrong (for instance...he still listens to Phil Collins era Genesis; doesn't wear T-shirts under work shirts; LOVES the Transporter series; thinks Heineken is the apex of beerdom...etc) who didn't like it. He asked me if I saw QoS and when I told him I did he asked me to explain the villain. He said "I don't see what the big deal is, he was stealing water in a poor country...that's not a villain worthy of Bond. I want those villains from the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan movies who had giant plans to destroy the earth."

I think in that simple statement a complete explanation of all that went wrong with Bond and all that is now right with Bond was set out.

As far as plots go I thought it was good, great even (stealing water like that is definitely evil), there was just something about the way the movie as a whole flowed (no pun intended) that didn't sit well with me.

Jaws, no contest. Any man that can bite through a steel cable is a decent villain in my books.

I don't know...for coolness factor, sure, Jaws, but for "Damn, that guy is cool" it would have to be "Pistols" Scaramanga or Emilio Largo. Ernst Stavro Blofeld wins the "Most Evil" category hands down.

What about the best Bond girl? My vote is split:

Honey Ryder

Just...wow...She wins for her oceanic emergence...

He's a worthy villian for the John Gardner-era-crappy novels-Bond...the one who quit smoking, jogs, drives a Saab, and forsook his Martinis for sparkling water. What a douche...

Grew up watching Connery so my vote goes for him. Craig is very very good as Bond. Excellent physical actor.

Pretty close to my feelings as well connery by a feathers blade edge over Craig. Moore's movies were almost cartoon like to me. But we all have our favorites i guess..

Quantum of Solace was better than Casino Royale, although both films were inadequate.

Bond is too much of an un-suave thug.

Casino Royale is filled with bad writing, and is very un-bond.

I dont like how they've turned Felix Leiter into a scruffy caricature of his former self, either.

They've taken all of the fun (and tradition) from the films and just tried to copy the Jason Bourne series.

Daniel Craig (a fine actor) would be better suited to the role of a Bond Villian. He just doesn't have what it takes to be Bond, in my opinion.

Bond was the last great film MAN.

And, unfortunately, he's dead.

1. Bad writing would be very Bond film-like, I think CR was, in fact, very well written.

2. I agree, but that is catering to the audience...its our fault.

What about the best Bond girl? My vote is split:

Daniela Bianchi:

Diana Rigg:

Diana Rigg, yeah...Good ol' Tracy. I'd have married her too...

And Tatiana Romanova, absolutely!
Here's Ms. Bianchi:

Like Ursula Andress, they had to overdub her voice because her Italian accent was so thick, lol...very un-Russian.

Thanks they knocked out my pic...almost the same one as you posted, same scene for sure.

Every time I see Kate Winslet, who I love too, I am struck by how much she reminds me of Daniela Bianchi.

Same kind of "womanly" body as well.

Diana Rigg was the penultimate Bond girl. She, in my opinion, was the first Bond woman.

As for writing, Casino Royale was the first well written Bond film since On Her Majesty's Secret Service. That makes it a great film in my book. Quantum of Solace was also top notch. I don't understand why it's drawn so much ire; watch a Moore film and QoS back to back and tell me that the series is going downhill. :)

Best Bond girl...hmmm...I'll have to think about that.

I don't see how anyone that knows anything about the Bond character and lived through the Moore era embarrassments can say anything remotely critical about the Craig outings.

These remarks about Craig being thuggish and being less than suave are off the mark too. Craig's portrayal is certainly in keeping with not only Fleming's character but also holds well with the SAS type which is the sort of individual that MI-6 would have tapped to fill a position like Bond's if he actually existed.

I have a suggestion for those that disliked QoS:

Think of CR and QoS as one BIG movie.

It seemed to help some of my friends understand the meaning and substance of QoS.
