What's new

Hats

hi,

Here are a couple of my Good hats. I suppose I ought to mention that I have three categories of hats: Working/Farm, Everyday, and Good. I wear the two custom-made hats as Everyday, which might be the opposite of what others would do with custom-made hats....

These are both vintage Adam hats. They were like new, so I decided to keep them that way for as long as possible, hence wearing them only as Good hats.

This one is another Silverbelly.

This one is a color I don't see very often.

Hi,

This one is another Adam, which is special due to the pattern on the ribbon. This one is my personal favorite due to the color of the body coupled with that ribbon. That is the factory crease. back in the day, hats came both open crown so it could be custom, or customer, creased as well as with a factory shaping job.

I have one more Adam hat, a brand-new open-crown one which was never creased or worn. It still as an OPA price tag inside. That dates it to WWII or just after because that is the rationing price tag. It was the centerpiece in my display cases when I had the store. Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of it. When I dig up the digital photos of the old hat shop, I am sure there is a pic of it in the case.

Hi,

Now, this next one was my greatest challenge. When I got it is was loaded with mildew. It is one of those classic Bosalinos with the old-style rayon worked into the rabbit felt. It feels like a baby bunny, and has this unique sheen from the rayon. I just had to save it.

The easy way would be to rip the hat apart and dunk it in naptha. I was worried about a reaction between the rayon and the naptha, though. So, I cleaned it with distilled water with just a little Lysol. Repeatedly. I left the sweatband in and loaded it with leather oil so the water would not damage it. I removed the original ribbon, but after cleaning it lost its' sheen and came out mottled. So, I used a new ribbon as close in color to the original as I could scare up.

I also had to slowly work it out on the hot block because it had shrunk a full size over the years of improper storage. I had to be really careful with the heat because of the rayon in the felt. It took about a dozen cycles of dampening and hot blocking to get it back. But, get it back I did. And, I even have a winter coat that matches the color of this hat like they were made to be sold together.

How in the world did/do you find So Many Great Hats !? I had an old hat like the darker one that was my Granddad's I worn from a young age , I loved that hat . The color , feel , everything . The hat I had as a little kid I worn every waking hour until it was too small was black . I had a picture of me as a (had it be three yr old) Little kid , eating a peanut butter sandwich , wearing that had , no shirt , boots , riding my horse with that hat . haha ! The first bicycle when I learned to ride , no one said anything about brakes , I hollered WHOA ! WHOA ! Crashed ... Pulling back on the handle bars and said Whoa I thought was how everything worked , ha !

Seriously , Stan you have some awesome hats , and just knowing all that is valuable info , like farming , you have to understand the whole deal to be good at it , goof ups happen , especially in the beginning with anything , but that's how you learn . ... barbershops were almost a thing of the past and they're coming back . Never know .

Boy , I guess the throw away mentality of corporations , and lack of pride in producing a great long lasting product , and commercialism , away bigger , better , if it's older toss it away . But I think like DE Razors , and Shaving , Hats and Classic things that never actually go out of style and last are gaining greater popularity . The easy money throw away stuff is fading . Like a good farmer is a jack of all trades and can wear a lot of hats (so to speak) . It's a tough job to learn , but can benefit you whatever you might run into .

Ladies used to quilt , darn socks , make clothes , COOK ! haha ! No drive through Fast Food at one time , and food doesn't come from the Grocery store , they're middle men . A lot of people (I should say a few) are keeping the traditional way alive . ... I see the wind cords on the band .

COOL Pictures ! Thanks Stan

Hi,

Stan the Hat man? No. Not really. Just another AD hobby. I am not really a hatter. I have yet to make a hat from a raw body. Just picking up some good ones here and there. Learned how to fix them out of necessity. I have more than enough and haven't bought a hat in several years now. As to where I got them, many came from eBay. Others came from thrift stores and the like.

Oddly enough my dad used Stan the Man on his race cars (48-64) as did I (83-05). Imagine my total confusion regarding Stan the Man when I first started following B+B here!

Oh, you've read that legendary meltdown?

I wouldn't know how to find it. If I remember right, one of the mods linked to it at one point to demonstrate ridiculous behavior. Maybe it is still around and someone will point the way.

I followed the links , THAT was INSANE ! Now I get , I do lunch with Springs1 ! Haha ! I'm thinking the guys in the white outfits , driving the big white vehicle , offering the tight white fancy jacket with funny buckles on the back and end of the sleeves did their job . 4 Posts and infamous with Epic thrown in . Very strange ... . Haha ! #2 Welcome to B&B . Cracked me up !
