My Guess... 3017

Has anyone given The Gentleman's Refinery Shaving Cream the 3017 treatment? Or I guess even tried it at all? Just curious.

Gentlemen:

I recently ordered some products in preparation for my birthday. Among them was a 3-pack of AoS Sandalwood with tallow. I decided to give the D.R. Harris Marlborough a break tonight and give the AoS a whirl.

Holy. Friggin'. Cow.

When the originators, or resurrectors, some would say, of this fine practice of 3017ing said that they would be perfectly happy to use AoS tallow for the rest of their life, they had good reason. An additional 3-pack will be ordered as soon as more shaving funds become available. Hopefully, supplies last. This soap will definitely not be grated into any container so that it will last as long as possible.

Just a heads up gents that we are only about 3 weeks out until the February MdC 3017 event takes off. I'm thinking that we have a separate thread for it so as not to overwhelm this thread. For planning purposes, please copy and add your name to the list of anticipated participants below. Please indicate which flavor of MdC you plan to use.

MdC 3017 Fest

1. beginish, Scented

Sorry, I won't be joining you guys. I started on a full jar of MdC fougere soap back in October, and now, almost 100 shaves will have taken place, and I'll be running out of MdC right around the last week of January. I've loaded the brush on the soap for 15 seconds per shave, making tons of great lather every time. I wasn't trying to kill it, nor was I trying to see how long I could stretch it out. I've used badger and synthetics, and during my 15 seconds, I don't pussyfoot around. I'll be watching to see how many shaves you guys are getting out of a jar of MdC!

You, sir, are a bad influence. Just placed an eBay order. I thought I had let this one pursuit go, but I'm a sandalwood fan and never obtained the tallow AOS. The new formula is just OK, IMHO.

Wow what a recommendation. I love the AoS scent and have two jars of the aftershave balm. But is the tallow formulation drying on the skin? That was my takeaway from the new soap.

You'll be glad you ordered! It's a perfect, light sandalwood and the performance is unmatched by any mass-produced soap that is made today. Mitchell's, Harris, and Tabac combined don't hold a candle to this stuff, IMHO. You're in for a real treat!

My face felt like I had used B&M or Mike's. Absolutely wonderful.

Four months of daily shaves sounds right to me.

I'm trying to 3017 a TOBS Sandalwood shaving stick.. Just last night the stick wouldnt dispense, so I broke it open and mashed/molded the soap into a bowl, Just trying to get rid of it cause I don't like it at all.. I love TOBS and the sandalwood cream, but the stick is annoying.

Mediocre lather from the MWF again today, but shave performance was decent. Still feel irritation but could be brush burn as I have to work the product a lot more on the face.

Best lather I could get was a little thin:

This was a bowl lather that literally had no water added, loading a squeezed boar:

I can't get that thick, creamy style lather from MWF.

Now the shaves appear to be fine, it's just the lather looks thin and dries out, while adding water to prevent that drying out then makes the lather almost like hand soap lather. Maybe that's a good thing?

I'm going to bowl lather the next couple days to give my face a break and go with the flow of the foamy lather.

Post #9993 in the 3017 Thread. :w00t:

So glad I found it as it's one of the most positive changes a method has made in my shaving routine.

I felt like the guy below when I first found the thread, but have been welcomed with open arms since I started.

Thanks to @johnniegold (Bob) and B&B for creating and keeping alive the greatest thread on B&B or the internet for that matter. :ouch1:

For comparisons sake, here is the lowly VDH Deluxe:
I like VdH and it has worked well for me when I've used it.

However, (and this is not a knock against it,) I don't consider it a fair comparison for lathering ability. S-L-S is pretty magical when it comes to making bubbles with water. I literally can't get hand soap with that stuff in it to wash down the drain at our house, it just keeps making more bubbles.

Good luck with MWF. I have no experience with it whatsoever, but your bowl lather looks like a product shortage to me.

Wow! Curious if you've been buying new stuff along the way or if you are really grinding down the den as was the goal?

For awhile there, I didn't buy any new soaps or creams and got the stockpile down to a very manageable level. I got to a point, though, where I felt like I was missing out on many things that I had not yet tried, like T&H creams, Italian soft soaps and the like. Combined with the fact that I wanted to get a bunch of vintage soaps and the stockpile increased again significantly. I'm in the Sabbatical this year, so I won't be adding any new software for sure.

Jarick, I would shave with that MWF lather every day. In fact, that's the consistency I shoot for with all of my soaps.

rockviper

I got moves like Jagger
Yup, that looks like the lather I use. Big thick Cella-man lather-beards don't do it for me. Only the lather on the skin provides cushion and glide.

strop

Now half as wise
Still getting good results from the LaToja cream. Probably using a bit more cream than I would absolutely need, but using it up was indeed the goal.
