Blade alignment?
So, I've been reading in a few posts about having to align the blade in the razor or about wild or mid siding a razor. I think my Parker 22r had alignment issues, now that I look back. But I've not really been concerned or verified the blade alignment in my R41.

Do any of you bother with checking your R41 blade alignment?

… i.e. you just plop the blade on the top cap, place the bottom plate on and tighten the handle down, with out any real checking the blade is aligned properly. I hope so because that's what I've been doing presuming the razor was made to properly align everything.

Never noticed any blade alignment issues with the R41. The razor is 95% perfect ... would be 100% if ...

... it was made of stainless steel.

The R41 centers the blade nicely, but there is a little play so it can be wildsided. Wildsiding/mildsiding is effective on the R41, easier on a 2011 than a 2013.

Being a relative noobie, is blade alignment a DE issue in general and something one should verify on all DE safety razors before using the first time?

I've been quite pleased with the R41.13 shaves, magnitudes better relative to my 22r

It can never hurt checking the blade alignment, but some razors are more susceptible of having issues than others ... FaTip are one of the razors that reportedly have blade alignment issues.

Thanks Aimsport, after reading an older post I had to go check my R41. There was not much play in the blade(Astra SP) and the top cap, but as the previous post mentioned there is a little more play in the bottom plate and you are able to mild/wild side in this manner.

Also, it stated, this can very between blade brands.

Was on tapatalk. Too lazy to type it all out. Sorry. Yes, you are correct. By "centers blade nicely" was saying there is not much room to shift the blade, but the play is there in the baseplate to wildside it, "it" meaning the R41, not the blade. Thanks for pointing out that my posting was as clear as mud and clarifying. :thumbup1:

It was made by Akasl handles. He made a few others for me for my hoffritz slant and a couple of Fatips as well. Nice custom work.

Interesting… I never heard of Akasl handles before. Not to take this thread off point, but I took a look and they look like they could be very nice. They seem big, and they definitely have unusual (somewhat odd, I must say) shapes, but these strange shapes make for very different, and in many cases beautiful handles IMO. The only thing that I'm concerned about is that having never used a handle with such "out there" shapes before, I might be afraid to order a custom one because I have no idea if I'd like it or not.

That being said, I'm all for having more options for custom handles, so I think this is great. The best way I can describe how his work looks to me is as follows: Very high quality handles, similar to UFO, but with less elegance… the elegance has been swapped out for a more modern look that experiments with very unusual combinations of knurling and overall shape. Honestly some of the knurling combos seems overly complicated for my tastes… there is a lot to be said for UFO's simplicity and elegance, but hey… these Akasl handles definitely are very interesting too.

I haven't seen many of these handles, but I have seen a few. And in my opinion this is the coolest I've seen so far. As Bill says, it can never be a bad thing having other options.

"B" standing for "best" seems to be a slight exaggeration to me. However...

I see that people using their R41 with a non original handle are admitted here, so I hope that a non original headplate on my improved R41 (I'll call it R411) which allows much cleaner, closer and quicker shaves will also not be a hindrance to be part of the zoo.

Wow, aimsport, that was your post/article about mild/wild siding. I also was on tapatalk and was just trying to remember the content of the post I had read, not realizing it was your post. Great post and good info thanks!

Nice ... I was wondering if that allows you to get some sort of slanted effect ... :tongue_sm

Now ... about that part of not being the best ...

Link to these handles you speak of.
I threw a bulldog handle on my razor today instead of the rose gold. Quite a weight difference but still a good shave. I seem to be getting the no pressure thing down.

Google AKASL razor handles, you'll find at least their Facebook page ... I don't know if there is more.
