I hone the Rolls razors out of the box on benchstones/whetstones. I tape the blade's spine & depending on the state of the bevel, progressively hone the edge with up to 5-6 progressively finer stones, mainly oilstones. I end honing with a 10000 grit waterstone & with what I believe is a Welsh purple slate stone 14000 grit using water. Stropping in the RR case.I ran it on the hone and strop it came with many times, it just doesn't seem that sharp. I believe it's carbon steel and it will rust if you don't dry it or leave it by other razors and water splashes on it.
I took a few strokes with it on an ATG pass. I haven't given it full attention though. It has a guard on it, and can probably hit from zero to about a 45 degree angle.
I have 3 RR sets including a 1922 Standard, an Imperial #1 (1923?) and another later Imperial with extra blades sufficient for a 2 weeks rotation.
I've used the RR's over different periods, lastly using the honing as above. With 3-4 different passes the shave is comfortable/OK but not brilliant. I recently got 2 Darwin razor sets & they give a much better shave, although I have to be careful as they are an aggressive shave if the gap between the edge & safety guard is adjusted to max width.
Am expecting 2 other wedge razor sets of different makes (Scharff & Heljerstrand) & look forward to sharpening the blades & using them.
I hope this was of interest, this reply after a gap of 3 years?
