Your personal mantra/saying

I like what Ferris Beuller said, "Life moves pretty quick, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you might just miss it."

Wanting for wisdom
  • Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. - Isaac Asimov
  • Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. - Samuel Johnson.
  • It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
  • Only dead fish go with the flow.

This too, shall pass.

Whenever I am facing a rough patch, I just remember how I got through previous ones and how much better I was for the experience.

  • The only person you can rely on is yourself
  • Its a lot easier when you don't care

Works every time, and stops me blaming others when things go bad.

I used to tell my kids, "You're not going to soar with the eagles if you flock with the turkeys!" My grandsons now hear that from their parents.

I tell my coworkers that they will never get reprimanded if they always remember to "Do the right thing"

It's funny when you hear these things reflected back. I guess that I use a lot of them in my daily speech. When my daughter went off to school, she said that her friends were amazed at all of the weird things she says and they started writing them down. She emailed me the list and they were all very familiar!

One of my favorites is a variation of your first:

"If you want to hoot with the owls, you still gotta scratch with the chickens"

I also like:

"You get what you inspect not what you expect"

My younger daughter was asked in her 8th grade class to write a wise expression that she learned from her parents. I had to laugh when I saw it at the parent/teacher conference:

"If you're not cheating, you're not trying!"

A high school teacher was a big fan of Ben Franklin's quotes. One I admired:

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

And from one of my college professors:

It doesn't cost any more to do it right
