I have a co-worker who swears by this stuff - and he claims he does not even like scotch.
I'm totally digging this thread back up again because I'm finally trying Suntory single malt whisky for the first time, a bottle of Yamazaki 12. I've never seen it before where I live. I went to pick up some Ardbeg 10 because I hadn't tried it yet and this was the only Suntory bottle left. It has a quite shockingly distinctive flavor compared to the Scotch I usually drink (heavy on the peat) but I find this quite enjoyable. I'd read that Suntory whiskys were quite different from their Scottish counterparts so I wasn't surprised by the differences - in fact, that's why I was so eager to try it. I get a very strong alcohol in the vapor but I also get a brown sugar and slightly candied orange in the aroma. But it's the finish that is so unique, very drawn out, that ends in a dry, woody finish with a hint of cinnamon - or maybe clove? - and vanilla. This is not my favorite whisky to have on hand and I anticipate the shallow complexity will make it quite favorable as a hot, summer whisky.
Now, I just turned it into mizuwari based on all the other references to it drawing out some peppery notes - wow! It has a strange delayed peppery wash that lasts just a few seconds but it quite interesting. However, I think it mutes some of the other palate notes that I prefer. I think this might be best if enjoyed on the rocks so you can have some initial full-bodied tastes followed by some watered down peppery swills toward the end.
Wouldn't be the only bottle of scotch on hand but certainly a respectable flanker. I'm glad I bought this today.

True! Big fan of Nikka FTB. Bottle at work now (gift set w glasses) on my top shelf!
Yamazaki 12 is great, but 18 is significantly better IMO.
I also have Yamazaki sherry cask which is a fantastic sherry monster (if you like that - I do). Hard to find but worth the hunt.
Need the 18 to round out my collection...
