Williams Mug Soap revisited: I like it !

Why anyone would choose to shave with a soap that smells like Citronella (I know, I know the smell is technically Lemon Verbena...blah, blah, blah.), is beyond me

This just demonstrates to me how people smell the same things differently. I don't associate citronella at all with Williams. It's simply a smell that I like and that's why I use it now and then.

I didn't shave with it yet again, but I did pick up another puck and did a test lather the other night.

I must say, loading and lathering it on the puck is the way to go. Bowl lathering is asking for a weak, anemic lather, as I have experienced in the past.

Loading/lathering on the puck let's you fully charge it up (just stay on the puck, and when you think you're ready, stay on there some more....), and then go direct to your face. It was not as creamy and rich as most of the other soaps I like (AOS, Pen's, Tabac, Trumper's, Valobra, C&S), it was much better in consistancy than I had experienced when bowl whipping it.

I didn't shave with it, as I was shave-testing a new straight, and didn't want to throw off edge evaluations with a wild-card soap like Williams.

Someday I'll give it a whirl again though.

My wife said it smelled "woodsy".

I said "like tiki-torches?"

"no"

"Like citronella?"

"Yeah, that's it..."

See told you it wasn't a hopeless soap, just is labor intensive to lather right :tongue_sm

Give it a shaving go and report back

I shaved with DE's using Williams for about a year actually when I was an impoverished student. It is true that with enough elbow grease you can lather it up (I've always facelathered) but in all honesty most other high quality soaps (read Valobra, Tabac, MWF) are significantly better than Williams, especially concerning slick cushioning lather and also the amount of brush work required.

Theres a reason its a couple of bucks at Walmart :001_smile so unless you were absolutely penniless (though, in this case shaving most likely is the least of your problems :001_rolle) and 'had' to use it I don't really see the point.

Give in to the Williams, Luke!

Almost there, try soaking the puck for half an hour first, especially when using a new puck. If used daily it should soften up on it's own.

It's still pretty lousey that you have to put so much effort into it, and still end up with a sub-par lather...

If I put that much elbow grease into lathering up, say Tabac, I would have enough creamy lather for two weeks worth of shaves.

And on the flip side of that argument, there are plenty of guys who get shaves that are just fine using a can of goo and a cartridge razor.

Yes, Williams can get you a decent shave.

I simply prefer an enjoyable and great shave. I'm also willing to spend the extra $9 for a soap that will make that happen...

We get it already, you don't like Williams. If you prefer something else, then quit your bellyaching and use it. YMMV and all that stuff.

Did I mention, I don't like Williams?

:001_tt2:

This thread did get me to go out and purchase another puck (buying shave soap is always a good feeling...). And I did lather it up. And the lather was better than the last time I tried it. Surprisingly so. So, I was on-topic with revisiting Wiliams. One of these days I'll even get around to giving it a shave again. All in due time...don't want to be hasty...

C'mon, if we can't bellyache around here, the forums will dry up and blow away!

Jeesh!

P.S.- Perhaps that's why my subconcious hasn't alllowed me to actually try the Williams for a shave again---what happens if I actually LIKE it!?

I'll need some sort of mental therapy, a group of spec1alists to treat my shattered mind and altered Worldview....

Okay, I'll let you off easy this time.

As for the mental therapy, you're already halfway there. B&B is a support group if nothing else, like AA. Hi, I'm Matt and I have a shaving addiction. :blushing:

Okay, so I used Williams for this morning's shave.

Nice, close shave*. I enjoyed the scent.

*a high-maintenance shave, as the lather dissapears really quick. But while it's there it performs pretty well. And even after it fades, it still provides slickness.

Exceptionally diplomatic. :thumbup1: I may have made the footnote a little smaller though.

I think I'll use my Williams just to show support.
