Will Mitchell's Wool Fat Shave Soap fit in a TOBS Shave Bowl

I really want to try Mitchell's Wool Fat, but the price difference between refills and the ceramic bowl with soap is quite significant. In Aussie, we can get the refill for up to $25 with cartage inclusive. Double that, and you've got yourself a bowl too. Save a few dollars (single digits) if I purchase from Bullgoose, but still a bit pricey.

Call me E. Scrooge, but it's only a bowl, and if it can be used for a variety of different soaps, like Mitchell's, why pay more?

MWF is a large puck of soap and a different shape to TOBS (and most other soaps for that matter) which have a rounded bottom. I can't imagine that an MWF puck would fit into a TOBS bowl.

I heard that you can buy a Mitchell's Wool Fat Shave Soap refill and put it in a Ikea bowl, the one with magnet lid and see through lid

You can mill it down or cut it in half and it will be fine. I trimmed the edges of mine with a pocket knife and stuffed it in an old spice mug.

I'm guessing it's shipping to Oceania that's the killer - did you try Connaught Shaving, or shaving.ie? They're in the UK/Ireland - maybe you can save a couple bucks there. I don't think AUS has to pay the VAT -

Other suggestion is post a WTB for an Aussie to part with his...or just ask for a sample of the soap itself. Whippeddog sells MWF samples, though I don't know what the shipping would be.

OR

See if you can get a better price on KENT luxury shaving soap - it is the same soap and can be found on the bay.

Lots of folks say they get better lather after milling anyway, so I say just mill it. Milling is easy, you just grate it with a cheese grater and then press the soap gratings into the bowl and press down hard. You might have to add a few drops of warm water, but on the soaps I have done this to I have not had to. I got the refill and just put it in a resealable plastic container from Big Lots. (4 for $1.80 so your not the only cheap one out there) I have not milled my MWF so I don't know exactly how hard the soap is, but I don't think it is that hard. Just throw the cheese grater in the dishwasher after your done or the SWMBO might kill you! ;-)

That's fantastic. You can save $3 if you buy the wooden bowl. But sod that, I paid the extra 3 bits and got the genuine article. You've saved me a lot, thanks. Wish I'd known about Connaught when I was looking for an extra wide Dovo Strop. I'd have saved a mint.

Thanks everyone for their replies and interest in my question. May the brotherhood continue.
