The grid is separate from the equations. Just draw a grid and number it as described. The value of the symbol comes from the shape that the number occupies in the grid. So, again, with the corrected symbol in the middle you get:
1+2=3
4+1=5
6+2=8
For extra credit, your son can submit his answer written in PigPen Cipher.Ah, thank you sir! The funny thing is, one of the first things I did was replace the symbols in the first line with 1+2=3. But even if the middle symbol had been right, I still didn't have enough to fill out the rest without knowing why they were those numbers.
