What's new

Why does a $5 Lord L6 shave so well?

I would very fine paying $12-$15 dollars for one with better construction.
That seems to be the sweet spot for popularly priced razors with good quality construction, finish/chroming. All three of mine were in that range including my King C. Gillette for around $12 during a holiday sale.

The two times I experimented with something under $10 (not including a sale price) the razor had issues that made it unusable for me.

I have a few KCG razors and the quality is fine. Of course, the $12 price was an extreme sale and the razor is normally a $30 razor.

I have been shaving with my KCG mostly for my full week of daily shaves. Still looks like brand new. I expect that it's longevity will exceed my own...

In that "teen'' price range, you can get quality that won't necessarily be present in the less than $10 price range.

The TTO Wilkinson Sword razor is well built and provides a quality shave. I bought at around $14, but that price included a tuck of German Wilkinson Sword blades.

They are only a few dollars more now. A good choice for someone getting onto DE shaving. The TTO design is a time saver.

I can understand building a sub $10 razor like the entry Wilkerson Sword that is made of Delrin. That makes sense for an $8 razor.

I would say that Lord 6 is one of the most underrated razors out there along with Turkish Yuma and plastic Wilkinson Sword.
Great shaver, similar feel like Merkur or EJ but more efficient, honestly I would say that shaves much better than these for 3x less money. I would call this razor a medium in terms of efficiency and aggressiveness, it's not ultra mild.
You will love it even more with blades like Gillette Platinums or Nacets.
Only downside for me is that threading on the top cap seems not that long lasting. But, frankly for a 5-6$ you can complain that much. I like the long handle and great knurling on it. It's a cheap razor but built quality is quite good considering the price.
I can't recommend this razor enough - especially if you are beginner and/or you don't want to spend too much money on equipment.

I used an L6 this morning. It's been about 1.5 years since I last used it. With a Suneko blade, it gave an excellent shave. I was amazed. No injuries or irritation. It's a well designed razor, not too mild, not overly aggressive, but with some real blade feel.

I used a shortened Razorock Halo titanium handle instead of the provided aluminum handle. With a nice handle, it shaved as well as some of my best razors. Very impressive!

Edited to add: I must report that it's a good idea to check alignment of the blade. I had to move the blade around a bit to get it even with the top cap.

I’ve used both the L5 and L6 for more than 10 years. They are excellent razors.

I paid less than $10 for each of them. I see them advertised for less than $6. A tremendous value.

I’ve read about issues with the threading since I started reading shaving sites. It’s baloney. I don’t know what some folks are doing to their razors but you’d have to really bear down to damage one of these. Tighten the handle tightly enough to hold the blade and you’re done. Mine are in perfect shape after 10 years of use. I see them easily lasting longer than I will

How can the handle threading issue be considered baloney when it has been reported multiple B&B members including @ShavingPrimate in his post above? Yes, I'm sure if someone is extra careful they can get 10 years from one as you have but too many others, who don't have this issue with their other razors, have reported the issue.

Best guess is that the use of different materials for the handle and head is the cause with the harder metal in one damaging the other. Doesn't take away the value of this $6 razor when it works for you. Unfortunate that the razor I received was too aggressive for me as noted above. Way too much blade exposure on mine.

I disagree with you. I am careful with all of my gear. I do not over tighten anything.

It could very well be that your razors, being of older production are made of better quality materials than later models like the one I bought a year or so ago?

I was in the process of tightening the head, no different than I normally do with my other razors. Just as I was reaching the point where there was increased resistance, the thread stripped.

Pity, since I liked the way it shaved, what little use I had of it. Perhaps I will purchase another one at the dollar store and give it another try?

You bought a Lord razor at the Dollar Store?

Geometry, blade clamping, gap, angle ... so many miniscule things that can make a major difference
+
personal preference and habits

That can be any razor. And nobody will be able to figure it out but you, people can make an educated guess based on your preferences if you happen to own and could comment on this or that razor, but in the end, see first sentence.

Now I have quite some fancy steel and titanium razors, and many of them cost dozens of times that of a Lord L6, and some cost several times of the razors that cost already a dozen times.

The best fitting razor is not necessarily expensive. I have a quite expensive Ti razor that has quite a horrible head, but otherwise is really beautiful. That's my Boti Vortex.

If you are looking for something that will last quite a bit longer than a plastic Lord but isn't in the 150-300 EUR/USD range, the "Bayonetta" might be worth a try. Maybe it shaves even better, but there is never a guarantee.

This said, you could also try the plastic BIC and see how it compares to the Lord! That's something I always wanted to do but always forget.
I used the classic white and orange single blade BIC when I was a poor student and it was surprisingly effective ; better than the dual blade blue plastic Gillettes and cheaper too.
I take 2-3 on a two week holiday and it doesn't matter if they get lost, stolen or confiscated.

Sorry guys but my Lords are quite sturdy. I’ve tightened the handle onto the head at least once a week for 10 years: no sign of trouble. Your guess is as good as mine.

I did. I bought it at the Dollar Tree. They have some items that are priced more than a dollar.

This is the razor.

Oddly enough, when I retrieved the razor to take this photo, I noticed that the handle was not spinning.

I stopped using it because the handle would not tighten and kept turning.

I took it apart and placed my Voskhod blade and put it back together. It shows no signs of being stripped. I tightened it down lightly but it seems tight. I will shave with it tomorrow.

That looks like $1.25 - Seven Day Test Razor, I use with supplied Blsde until gone.

Worked good, but worked better with QUSLITY BLADES.

It’s a TECH CLONE, that works & Shaves well.

Note that this is a different razor than the Lord L6 some of us are talking about with an aluminum handle and alloy (zamac ?) head.

That is not Lord. That is the Dollar Tree $1 razor. Ultra aggressive. It will tear your face off. Not an L5 or L6 or even a Lord. It’s cheap Chinese.

You are correct, my bad.

I had purchased it out of curiosity.

It had been a couple of years since the L5 crapped out on me. It also explains why the threads were no longer stripped, because they never were on the dollar store razor.

I grabbed the wrong razor from the box. I should have grabbed:
