I'll add here while I'm thinking about it, couldn't use the balsa on my rigarazor, made it way too aggressive. But I haven't had to use more than leather so far.
I believe I'll rehone it to my progression when the time comes.
I have a couple of Rigarazors and have only taken them to the roo* so far. Still using the original edges. Interesting to hear about diamond balsa making them aggressive. I'll keep that gem of information tucked away for when they need a touch up. Thanks.

*In case anyone was wondering what I meant, my strop is kangaroo leather.

:welcoming: Yeah, I was wondering about the roo*

Andrej the rigarazor maker had mentioned about being careful with paste, that it could do what it did.
Wonder why that one but not my other razors, bevel angle perhaps?

Lots of reasons, mostly the condition of the edge prior to going to paste and steel hardness.

Diamonds and CBN are aggressive, and it does not take much to lengthen the cutting edge or burr, then it breaks off and you have a micro jagged edge.

Most new stroppers use too much pressure, add aggressive paste and a lot can go wrong at the edge in a hurry. Worst case, is not a big deal, just joint the edge and reset the edge in about 10 laps on a finish stone and paste again.

Add to that everybody’s skin and beard are different. And there are more comfortable edges than an aggressive pasted edge.

It can take a while to fully absorb the difference between sharp and comfortable. Sharp is easy.

Update on going back to pasted balsa from trying a small arkansas sugical.
I use three 1/16" balsa pieces with 50k/100k/200K diamond paste.

I shaved tonight with my JA Henckles #50 restropped on the three balsa then clean leather.
Guess it was good to try the Ark because it helped me realize how much I enjoyed the edge from the balsa strips.

It was one of those 'Oh, wow, that's a great shave' moments.

All my razors finished on linen and leather. Even my flat ground wedge after a leathered board with iron oxide paste.Gets clean off and I do a session on linen and leather. Gives a very comfortable shave.
