Which Semogue brush is the best bang for your buck?

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have come close to buying from vintage scent a couple times but for various reasons purchased elsewhere. I'm not sure the wait and hassle is worth the few dollars saved. I had a very similar experience with Star Shaving Supplies. There are too many great vendors on these boards to have to deal with those that fall short.

So, not to get off-topic here, but I'm starting to get annoyed with Vintage Scent. I placed my order on 7/29/13 and paid for it immediately. The order was still listed as "Processing" a few days ago, so I emailed them since it had been two weeks. I thought maybe it had shipped even though it was listed as processing. I received an email back from Bruno saying that he was having trouble with stock and that it would ship tomorrow. Yesterday was "tomorrow" and it still has not shipped.

I know that a lot of people on here have recommended VS, but I cannot recommend them myself. I was expecting 2-3 weeks to receive my order, not 2-3 weeks for it to actually ship. I would be okay with it if he had let me know as soon as I ordered that there might be a delay. I wasn't expecting to find this out when I inquired after two weeks of hearing nothing.

A warning to anyone shopping for a SOC: the low prices of VS are appealing, but you get what you pay for with awful customer service. Next time, I would spend the extra money and order from an actual reputable vendor like WCS. I would have had my order at least a week ago, instead of being frustrated that it hasn't even shipped yet.

... If you bowl lather the SOC is a spectacular brush. I have both the B&B and SOC and the B&B cannot touch the SOC for bowl lathering, IMHO.
I have the B&B and just ordered the SOC. Since I bowl lather, I'm really looking forward to trying out the SOC. :001_smile

I have owned the b&b, omega 13337 and IMO the SOC is definitely in a different league and is well worth the price.
On top of the better knot, it had almost no animal smell (to my surprise as the b&b was heavy there) and the handle design is excellent.
I also have the 2012 SE Soc with the mixed knot and it is wonderful. For $50 from shavetools it is a bargain.

An update on my experience with VS: I just received an email that my order was shipped. I'm mildly annoyed at it being two weeks before my order even shipped, but I ultimately cannot complain as I went into it not expecting to get my brushes anytime soon. Take away from it what you will and make your own decision. The low-hanging fruit of the cheap SOC is tempting, but only you can decide if the wait is worth it. At no point was I afraid of being scammed or cheated, I was just irritated at lack of communication and how long it was taking.

I emailed VS the same day that you posted about the processing issue. An hour later they posted it as shipped.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

It may depend on which brush you ordered. I ordered a pair of ash wood brushes and was told they had stock issues. They may not have issues with the cherry, or maybe that was just an excuse for forgetting about my order. Maybe they just have a problem with forgetting about orders? That would explain shipping them after being gently reminded about them.

+1 for the Semogue 1438. Once broken in, this brush is soft with exceptional lather building properties. I do prefer short loft and shorter handle brushes; and the 1438 is the perfect for me. I like the 1438 more than my expensive better-badger brushes that I have since sold. One thing to keep in mind is that it takes several weeks of daily use, face or palm lathering, to break in the brush. From there it continues to improve. Also have to give Semogue Kudos to the 830; once broken in it is a fine medium-length boar brush.

I have a Semogue 2011 LE Finest Bristle 1, an SOC and a 610. My favorite of the three is the 610, and as it the least expensive, it is my clear choice for "bang for the buck". I exclusively face lather, and the 610 is the perfect brush for the job. It has soft tips, good backbone with the right loft and good flow through. It picks up soap well and holds enough lather for three passes.

Update: my SOC has landed in the states from VS. for those who also ordered it recently, check it out. I hope it arrives in a few more days!

I've been thinking of getting a boar too, since I have a synthetic already and a nice badger on the way. The 830 seems the best bet to me, except that the SOC 2-band also looks nice... then you'd have to get a SOC boar so they match :D.

What is the price on this? Mine is coming up as "N/A". It looks beautiful though!

That website is unfortunately closed for business until the 25th (I'm assuming the owner is on holiday), so on the specific product pages all prices are N/A so that you can't click them to buy. Go to the category page instead of a specific product page then you can see the prices. FYI that brush is £48.52 ($75.94) including VAT.
