What's new

What's your favourite pen for the office and why?

Ha! now I must have a VP.

I highly recommend it. I have two complete pens (F and M) and an additional B nib/feed/converter/inner mechanism thingy (found in a clearance sale so couldn't resist).

Bear in mind that the fine nib is really fine. It took me some time to get used to it, but now it's probably my favorite of the three, especially for making notes in my planner. The medium is a smoother writer but feels a little too broad to me now. I'll probably have the broad nib ground to a stub or oblique stub.

If you don't mind the looks, I recommend the "carbonesque" models (it's really meant to mimic kasuri cloth rather than carbon), as they feel nicer in the hand than the lacquered models.

There's a good review and some pro/con discussion here.

A VP has been on my list for a while, the more I grab a pen while on the phone at work the more I think I would love having this in my pocket, what do the steel, and gold nibs feel like, or how do that differ from one another. I figured for a work pen the steel nib would be fine for me anyway

Although my current "office" rotates between my kitchen, basement, and the hammock on the patio, I would agree that the Pilot VP is a great all-around office pen. Durable, nice to look at, and so far pretty bulletproof. It just works every time I pick it up.

If I was back taking notes all day and signing a couple hundred checks a week (it was kind of an old-school company), I'd probably vote for something a little lighter. The Schaeffer 330 I received today might be a decent choice - slip-on cap, it works great posted, and it's inexpensive enough that if it walked away I wouldn't go on a rampage to get it back.

The VP does have the one-handed operation down pat, though. That might be worth putting up with a few extra grams on a daily basis. Thank goodness I don't have to make that choice for now.

At the office I like to use my Esterbrook Dip-Less unless I'm away from my desk then I use either a preppy or one from my case.

On the road with customers I use either a Pel M200 or my Lamy 2000 it just depends on what I pull from my case.

+1 on the Esterbrook Dip-Less. I have one on my desk too.

I also like my Waterman X-Pen for office use, since it's ridiculously easy to fill and the fine nib writes decently on crappy paper.

b'dum TSSsss! Here's here all week, folks!

I'd imagine the steel nibs are fine, but I've never used one. Shall I send you one to try out?

Your office sounds a lot like mine.

Depending upon what I am doing, I use a free square looking pen with a pilot gel refill in it...that goes with me any where on the lot in case I drop it. But in the office I use my Rudy Vey big yeller roller ball pen....it is the one that I dropped on the lot and it shattered, thus the "the scream heard around the world". Brian heard in over the street noise of New Jersey. That is why I carry the cheap one on the lot. However, when I write my thank you notes and sign my letters, my P51 comes out.....but not recently, they are held up in new Jersey once again by a freaky June Blizzard and they can't make it to the post office. (LOL)

But I really miss those little devils writing my cards....

Lamy Vista. I used the Pilot Metro for a while and liked it as well, but I enjoy being able to see the ink in the Vista. I just ordered an EF nib for it (on sale at Goulet btw) since the F seems a bit larger than I want. I like that its a snap cap and holds a fair amount of ink.

The VP is next on my short list of pens though.

It seems like a VP is on a lot of our short lists around here.

Lamy Studio.
Reliable, inexpensive, easy to fill. decent writer for what little I do at work. Did I mention inexpensive in case it walks off?

Since my office is down here in the basement of my house, my favorite office pen is whatever I feel like writing with! (One of the many advantages of retirement.) Currently, it's a vintage Sheaffer Flat Top, loaded with Diamine Oxblood. Five minutes from now, it might be something completely different. :thumbup1:

I finally found a fountain pen and ink combo that works on the crappy 15-lb Staples pads we have in the office now: a Pilot 78G in fine with Pelikan 4001 ink. The royal blue looks completely faded on the paper, so I'm going to load up the converter with Pel Brilliant Black and leave that pen in the office.

I've been using my 45 w/converter for work. The slip on cap seems a bit easier than the 51's and I worry less about losing it.

I always manage to have a few Kaweco Sports eyedroppered up and ready to go, as well as one of my B&B LE Edison pens; push coming to shove, I've got a lake of ink behind those nibs for a hard slogging of lots of note taking (happens sometimes.)

I also like having a clear Kaweco Sport for eyedroppering Ink Drop samples.

I have at least one brush pen ready for signatures.

Seems like I'm definitely in a minority here, but my FPs at work are almost all Esterbrooks. My favourite is a Copper "J" with a 2668 firm medium nib. It's always inked with Black Swan in Australian Roses. Second up is a Blue "J" with a 9461 manifold fine nib always inked with Liberty's Elysium.
