What's your coffee today? What brew method? Photos

I wasn't on the bike - my in-laws are in town, and as we were headed to San Anselmo anyway, I pointed out that we should take a slight detour.

There were (at least) five pastries on the table, being shared around. I chose a dark chocolate item that seemed to be a cross between a cookie and a biscotti; you can barely see it in the upper right of the case. On our table was an almond thing and a blackberry thing and some other stuff.

Oh, and a single cap. :)
Downtown San Anselmo is only 3 blocks long but there are 5 coffee shops !
 
Bought a stainless steel Passalacqua cuccumella for $35 with free shipping ... paid with paypal ... the receipt shows the vendor as " HONG KONG JIMI " ... Glad I used paypal " just in case " .... However Bialetti is now Chinese owned , so I'm wondering , can these prices for machines be legit : https://www.coffeemakers-store.com/coffee-machines/

I would look at the 1ZPresso line.
I have enjoyed my JX in the past and am really liking my K-Ultra right now.
If I was focused on ultra-light roasts, I would take a look at the ZP6.
Thanks. I went with the 1Zpresso X-Ultra in the end. It landed today and the first thing I did was drop it on the wood floor. Oops the handle slides straight off! Who knew?

The K looked nice too but it was twice the price. I figured the X would be good enough. It’s just for casual home use in the weekend. I’m not trying to compete with the local barista. Ideally I’ll still have some money left to see him once in a while…

It's 54° in Music City right now with a high around 68° today. It looks like we're in for some rain this afternoon. About 6 hours of sleep last night. I woke up with a slight sinus headache but the Alka Seltzer Plus knocked it right out. Another productive session yesterday. I'm off today and tomorrow and back at it on Thursday. I have a lunch date at 11 am but just relaxing at home other than that.

Bad news on the Major's end: he + his CO are back from Aruba. And, sorry, wherever you live, he's pretty sure that Aruba is better. So, there's that. He did the maths, and figured he could move the whole there, including his kids + father-in-law. Yes, you pay out the wazoo for most other things, but it's manageable. So, maybe in the future, he could consider moving there. Plus, given the immigration docs he was able to dredge up from his family's arrival in the US, his entire family qualifies for citizenship in a Schengen Zone EU country, meaning that he could move to Aruba, a constituent island country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, without much difficulty.

Moving on.

But, at the very least, he was able to bring back 12 oz of Kompa Nanzi coffee, which is a way to extend a bit of the memory. In fact, this coffee is better than what the Major drank at the resort, since it tasted either over-roasted or like it sat on a burner for too long. Today, the Major started his day w/a cup o' Kompa Nanzi made in the Keurig, which tasted better than he had every morning.

My wallet cries.
No photo but a picopresso "pull" of the Tanzania beans from a local roaster. A little water to make my americano and away we go. Thinking of bringing in a little espresso cup to work... but not sure how much use that will get, and space at work is limited. We'll see. Hope everyone doing well.

Make sure to check out the online manual (for download as a PDF) for that grinder and videos on YouTube about cleaning/calibrating the grinder. Cleaning it on a regular basis will extend the life of the burrs. Learning to zero the grinder calibration will make life easier down the road when you clean the grinder and need to re-calibrate it.

I didn't check the calibration before using my K-Ultra and I found later that it was a few clicks off. I had to back and adjust my brew notes based on this error. I then zeroed the grinder on the next cleaning.

Also keep in mind that until your grinder is 'seasoned', may have a metallic taste in your brews. Once it is seasoned, you will noticed that you will need to adjust the grind slightly. This is not a 1Zpresso thing but a general steel burr grinder thing. I found some inexpensive coffee to grind through to help season my K-Ultra. Some places sell bulk coffee just for this purpose. Most references you will find for seasoning a grinder have to do with commercial electric grinders and they recommend a large amount of beans to be ground to season it. That is not the case with manual grinders (or at least not for my K-Ultra). I never knew about seasoning a grinder when I picked up my original JX and didn't have any issues. So, just something to consider.
 
I envy your birdwatching. We used to have several pairs of cardinals, bluebirds, woodpeckers, and a brown thrasher that was probably my favorite - I loved his attitude - in our back yard. we had to do away with our bird feeders, though. A large Norway rat also enjoyed them and decided to move into our crawlspace. Evicting it proved to be an expensive, drawn out process.
