Don't know that I'd want to use anything too abrasive. There are a couple of threads here on removing tarnish....
IF I were to do this one, I'd begin with a bunch of the treatments that turns the Silver sulfide (tarnished silver) back into Silver (thus avoiding plate loss).
Here's a thread on a Bulldog where AsylumGuido outlined the process (13th post in thread), and here's a web article on how it works.
I've used this process to decent success, though in the end (maybe more treatments were needed?) I have resorted to a light use of silver polish (Wright's Silver Cream from Walmart) to finish the task. Note, the above process is for tarnish only, the grungy stuff will still need to be cleaned off by other means (I've done it prior to treating, with Scrubbing Bubbles and a toothbrush, and after the process with the silver polish).
