What's new

What Kindle do you have? Do you wish you had a different one?

I have a kindle keyboard with 3g and a paperwhite. I prefer the paper white as its easier to read but like the convenience of the keyboard to download when traveling.

I've got a Kobo Glo, just for reading ebooks. It's probably most like the Paperwhite
With the LED edge-lighting the battery lasts for weeks, especially if you leave the wifi off. At night I find that the minimum "1%" brightness is plenty to read by.

Something that took a while for me to figure out is that you can load your own .otf or .ttf typefaces onto the Kobo with a simple drag'n'drop method, although not all of them behave properly (eg. substituting Bold for Italic).
My favourite typeface is Bitter, which was developed specifically for e-readers.

LOTS of used Kindle ebook readers on Ebay though some of the sellers want more than new prices. I just picked up a third generation Paperwhite, the current model, for $70 with shipping. Listed as refurbished so probably has the screen replaced. A wi-fi only version with 4 GB and the backlight. It should also have the 300 DPI screen. Not listed whether or not it has special offers and you cannot tell visually if the pictures were taken when it is not registered so far as I know. IMO too good a buy to pass up for a Kindle with 4GB and backlight now that wi-fi hot spots are so common. The dual communication capable ones with wi-fi and 3G cost so much more when new any more that they are hard to find used.

To me a used Paperwhite is currently the best buy in a Kindle book reader as it has the back lighted eink screen.

Unfortunately turned out to be unregisterable as the SN was reported to Amazon as lost by the original owner. Once reported lost or stolen, Amazon moves the serial number to a unregisterable category, rendering the unit pretty much useless. Per Amazon tech support the move is NOT reversible. Seller did refund me my money.

The 7" Kindle Oasis arrived a few days ago. I got the 32 GB version with wi-fi and 4G communications capability. I like the unit though the shape is almost square and the Amazon leather cover is overpriced and provides minimal protection in my opinion. I do find a more rectangular shape reader preferable and have all the Kindle e-ink reader models as well as 5", 6.8" and 7.8" Kobo e-ink screen units to compare with. I will replace the cover asap as others become available. I really like the larger screen and the new control over fonts, font bolding and back lighting though with the latest firmware update the Kindle Voyage is quite similar. IMO for page turning the switches are preferable to screen touching. Just wish they were on both sides on the Oasis.
