What Handle Did You Use Today?

There are so many interesting handles available these days that I would love to try. I tend to prefer shorter and lighter handles and today was another great shave with my favorite the Lupo 95SB on the Vintage Thin Bar handle. Simple yet extraordinary!

Yates 921-H, scalloped on Yintal Brass handle

The Yates 921 head is a bit of an outlier in the razor world. First, the threading on this head and on Yates handles is #10-32 (SAE), which means that the Yates handle won't fit on M5 x 0.8 screws, but generally handles with M5 x 0.8 threading will fit on the Yates head.

Which leads me to the second special characteristic of the Yates 921 head: its baseplate geometry. Not every M5 x 0.8 handle will fit on the Yates head because the "stepping" will prevent handles with a wider upper girth to screw all the way on. This can somehow be circumvented by stacking three nylon washers on the plate.

Because of all this, only a handful of non- Yates handles will fit without the need of a tower of stacked washers. This Yintal brass handle being one of them. I actually own the Yintal bronze and after I confirmed that the handle fits I ordered the Yintal brass solely for the its handle. It just looks a bit better than the bronze toned handle.

I have to add that the Yintal Bronze is just a razor with a bronze colored brass handle and a matching head out of zamak. The Yintal Brass is of the same material with the difference that both the handle and the head are electro-plated.

Thanks for your thoughts. Well written, well done! I agree with you; the Yintal brass is a very nice-looking handle. Congratulations, and enjoy your shaves!

Gillette Tech NDC on NEW handle

This is one of five Gillette Tech razors I got a while ago. All of them are in great condition, but this one has a bit of plating loss on the cap, and it came with the "wrong" handle. But even if this razor is mismatched, both the handle and head look like they have been paired for quite some time. Actually, putting a better preserved "right" Tech handle on it would be a worse mismatch in my opinion. So, I keep them together and I actually prefer the large Ball- End handle from the NEW. I guess one of the previous owners did so too and just attached his older NEW handle to his new Tech head. That wasn't a bad idea then, and it isn't one now. It shaves excellent.

Mühle R41 on Parker 98R handle

The Parker 98R "Ultra Heavy Weight Long Handle" is a good match for the fairly aggressive R41 head. It's sufficiently heavy to let the razor do the work, reducing applied pressure, and it's quite long which I do enjoy.

The handle is chrome-plated brass and does have a very good grip. Aside from the larger weight and its length, this handle is also much wider than any of my other handles. It doesn't fit in any of my stands, and I have stand which will fit 15mm wide handles. It's not my most favorite handle, but it is a good match with the R41 simply because of its weight.

Yaqi Vostok 1.05 DC on Razorock Superknurl handle

There isn't any grippier handle that I know of. The knurling on this handle is very pronounced but not as much to be uncomfortable, just don't run it over exposed skin at speed it's like a grater. The Superknurl is one of those handles which will make you feel like having Gecko feet. The grip is safe at any angle, full of soap and however you may hold it. It's on the heavier side but it balances almost any head out very well. CNC'ed stainless steel 316L means that it'll hold a lifetime or three. And the best about this handle, it's quite inexpensive. Every DE shaver should have the Superknurl in their collection.

Yaqi Harlequin on Razorock UFO handle

I paired the Harlequin with the UFO handle for two reasons. I didn't like the look of the Yaqi Harlequin handle. The diamond pattern on it just didn't look too grippy to me. Since the Yaqi Harlequin is essentially a homage to the 1931 Gillette Goodwill and this razor was usually matched with a ball-end handle, it made sense to me to match the Harlequin with a handle which slightly resembles the ball-end, and that was the UFO.

The UFO is a bit less grippy than the Superknurl, but then again the Superknurl is in a league of its own. There's still more than enough grip and weight to balance the razor perfectly out. It's a very good match with this head and it looks stunning. The only (very) small complaint I have, is that the handle could benefit from 5mm more length, it is 85mm. But that's just my preference as I find 90mm to be the perfect handle length. Nevertheless, I make the UFO work despite that little personal drawback and it is always a pleasure to use this razor in that combination.
