What's new

What do you do to maintain and clean your razor?

I have a Edwin Jagger DE89 and I was wondering what do you guys do to clean your razors? Do you have to open up your razor for every shave to dry it? It says never enclose a wet razor so I was just wondering. I'm still new to shaving with a safety razor and I just want to take care of my products

Some people remove their blades in between each use and clean with alcohol after each use then wipe & dry their razors but I don't think that is really necessary.

For me I just rinse the residue off then shake the water out. Once I start to see some white soap residue coating the razor I do a quick Scrubbing Bubbles clean on my 3 piece razors and for my TTO or razors with hollow parts I toss them in the heated ultrasonic cleaner then follow up with some Scrubbing Bubbles if necessary.

These are Gillette's cleaning instructions for NEW razors:
To Clean After Using
It is not necessary to take apart. Loosen cap-turn guard at right angle as shown above and retighten. Rinse under running water. No need of wiping. New Gillette Blades resist rust.

Here are some cleaning instructions I could find for their TTO & Adjustable razors(thanks to mr-razor):

I only use SEs and injectors, but with both I run them under warm water until all the lather is gone. I then spray the blade with some alcohol and in the case of the SEs I take the blade and pat it dry in a towel and leave it there until next use. If soap scum is building up, I'll just spray with Scrubbing Bubbles and clean with an old toothbrush

I rinse them off well after use, shake excess water off, then pat dry. If it's a TTO then I'll open the doors and give it a rinse inside there too. Once a month, or depending on frequency of use, I'll use scrubbing bubbles to thoroughly clean and remove any soap residue buildup.

I rinse and shake dry my TTO razor after each shave, but without taking the blade out. Every few weeks I let it soak in soapy water (dishwashing soap), and afterwards I give it a gentle brush with a toothbrush. I don't oil or lubricate.

I have a Merkur 180 and I take it apart and rinse it and dry it; I take the blade out and rinse it and dry it also. It's quick and easy.

I take mine apart, clean, dry them and store for the next time. I don't know if it's necessary, but I really like pulling out a clean razor every time I shave.

I just rinse it out under cold water and shake it dry and then I will wipe the head off on a towel and hang it to dry on it's hook. I was getting some soap build up on it and took it apart and cleaned it with some AP cleaner, looked like new when I was done.

A nice rinse,3 piece razors I take apart and rinse.Dry with toilette paper, blades same thing, pat not wipe.Once a month a Mar-V-Cide soak for 3 minutes, then rinse and dry.If I see scum or wax build up I used barkeepers friend with hot water and toothbrush.

I'm anal about keeping some things clean and my razors are one of them things so basically what I do after each shave is take the razor apart and soak it a small tub of diluted Barbercide and distilled water. Usually only for less than 30 minutes depending upon what else I have going on. I have on accident left it in over night more than once and it has never hurt the razors. I've found that a quick soak after each use keeps it more than clean enough so I never have had to use scrubbing bubbles or any other cleaner. Chris

Dry them when I'm done, blast with Scrubbing Bubbles when they're gross. I'll use a toothbrush too if I've been truly negligent.

I know everyone thinks my 151 thing is nuts, but I never have to clean my razors. Since I started doing that back in 2011, I've never used the scrubbing bubbles again.

I use scrubbing bubbles every couple months but soak my razors in my Barbicide jar after every shave for no more than a few minutes.

I take the blade out and wash the blade in really hot water and dry with a towel or tissue. Then, with a soft toothbrush, lightly brush the razor to get out the soap, etc. rinse the razor in hot water and dry. Since I change blades every 3 to 4 days I put the blade back in. If I'm using a TTO I lightly close the doors.

Abut once a month I do a really thorough cleaning. Take a look at Geo's (shavenation) instructional videos on cleaning razors. While you are there also take a look at the brush cleaning/maintenance video. Make some popcorn and enjoy the movies.

To clean the actual razor, I do a monthly soaking in a solution of Borax.

But on the daily basis, its wise to dip your razor w/ blade into a cup of alcohol. The reasoning behind this is that tiny microscopic water molecules crystallize on the end of your razor when your wash it with just water and this can lead to irritation from tugging/pulling during your next shave. But by dipping it in alcohol after your shave, the alcohol will displace the water thereby preventing it's crystallization on your blade and keeping your blade nice and sharp for your next shave.
