What's new

What did you hone today?

A touch up for the BB Wells on a narrow Nakayama Kiita. I also ways get great results from this stone and today was no different. The BB Wells has a well defined smile. For razors like these I prefer a narrow hone.

I just received my Rosetta Matrix stone from Canada today. This one got stuck in their mail strike for over 6 weeks. This is my 4th different stone from this dealer and I am pretty satisfied.

This stone is beautiful to look at. Sort of red, black and tan mixture. It's very hard and very fine for finishing. I burnished it so I can use it with oil instead of water. After burnishing the Rosetta and honing on my King 6k, Iaid a couple of drops of oil on it and I put it to work on my Clausen razor. Almost immediately I noticed a nice black swarf forming and the blade began to sharpen rather quickly even though it's advertised as slow. It felt similar to my black Ark and I guess it should because this stone is novaculite of some sort as well. I'm not sure of the pedigree(?) of this novaculite, but it felt very close to the Ark and seemed to sharpen as well to.

I was pretty darned satisfied with the shave it provided, but I think there is a bit more there. I'll have to do more work with this one, but this stone might be the one.

It almost looks like outer space. Really a pretty stone.

If it's kicking up swarf with oil, that doesn't sound like a razor finisher.

I read a thread about maintenance with pasted strops and decided to pull out the diamond pasted balsa again for a bit of fun. I haven’t used an edge like this for years. It’s an absolute light saber just as I remember. Maybe my technique has improved enough to use the edge comfortably. It doesn’t sound like people do this very much anymore. If someone was looking for a cheap shaving set up this stuff could be just the ticket. It’s probably the easiest and cheapest way to a super sharp edge.

I’ve always liked the diamond strops. I keep a TM 4 sided loaded with .5 and .25 for a touch up here and there.

Starlet Deluxe
Jointed the edge
Naniwa Snow White with slurry. Brought the edge back then diluted down to water
Suehiro 10K with slurry down to water
Nakayama Asagi with Tomo, finishing on a misty slurry.

Very nice results, the edge is very promising. HHT was vey good

Shave test next

Went back to the Jung. Jointed the edge and re-honed it back on the Suehiro 10K. Did a series of laps then went to this Dresantte for a few series of x-strokes with water and jet dry.

HHT off the stone was very good. Shave test next, gonna compare it to the Jnat edge. Both should be pretty nice

My 6/8 CW Schuffig did not need a honing, but I could not sleep last night. It’s getting close to going home and this fella is getting restless. None of my 7 work razors needed honing, but this one was just used and within reach so it got the call. The progression was 6.7, 3, 1.2 and finished on .85. Oh man I really like these stones for work/travel. Thanks @JPO for helping nudge me that way. Excellent shave, none of the synthetics I’ve owned have provided such a comfortable edge.
