What's new

What did you hone today?

Heel hook fixed. Then naguras on hard shobu mizu asagi. Took 3 attempts this is definitely my best effort. Hair test - is like the hair isn't even there. Should be a good one.

So…yesterday…I got the TI Spartacus’s edge right, and went to the new to me 10x2.45 coticule. It had arrived yesterday, was flat, and so I ran around 75 finishing laps on water. It felt glassy, lifeless under the razor didn’t appear to do too much (slow with very very little swarf), and I thought perhaps someone had used oil previously because of the way the water reacted on the surface.

I was interrupted by the early arrival of my in-laws which caused me to finish up much more quickly than I would have liked, did an HHT which was great, and called it ready.

However, today I found myself with some time and I decided to lap it a bit with the worn 1200 Atoma…and to my surprise two extremely thin blue veins appeared once I rinsed it, and let it dry. So I texted my pal who said he had never seen them…so they must have just been under the surface!

I thought that was neat, and so I ran the razor on the surface with just water for 10 laps…and it felt like a different coticule…and I would describe the tactic feel under the razor as velvet vs glass, and I would describe the speed as medium instead of very very slow!

So I decided to really ensure that THIS coticule put the edge on the razor! I generated a nice slurry with the 1200 Atoma.

Then did 10 laps…

Then did 10 more for a total of 20 laps…

Then I diluted down with a nice spray of water every 10 laps for another 20…rinsed the razor and looked under the loupe…was shocked at how pristine the bevel and edge looked…so I said, alright…let’s finish under a stream of running water at the sink…

It took 14 light laps, and the razor stuck.

I knew what was going to happen, an extremely pure and crisp mirror finish was left in the hone wear and bevel near the edge!

The HHT with a fine hair (root in) was brilliant…as the hair slowly approached the apex of the edge just before it seemed to touch…the hair jumped away and fell to the paper!

I have used quite a few different coticules…ancient and newly mined…all sorts of different veins…this is one of the best I have ever experienced…the only thing left is the shave test tomorrow morning! Perfect stone!

I wasn’t very happy with the 10k finish off the Rockstar yesterday. There were too many rogue scratches in the bevel. I got to thinking why that was and decided that I needed to focus on the surface prep and controlling any cross contamination between the stones. I suspected that I might have had some loose grit floating around on the face of the stone.

Today I relaped the stones starting with the finest and working down to the coursest. I then dressed the surface of the Rockstars with the corresponding G7 stone and followed up with a good scrub with a Magic Eraser abrasive sponge.

The stones acted much finer today and kicked up noticeably less swarf. The cutting action was less aggressive. I cleaned and rinsed the surface frequently under running water as soon as any swarf built up. The extra attention to detail seemed to do the trick. The rough scratches were gone and the 10k was getting very close to mirror polish. Faint and even scratches were still visible at 10x magnification but I had to get the viewing angle just right to see them.

The HHT was solid right off the stone and was further improved with stropping. It looks like it’s time to clean the 5 year old TM horsehide because the stropping did introduce a few scratches. Nothing major but I gave it a good wipe down with a microfiber cloth. I’ll see how this edge goes in the morning.

On this particular stone i also got better results if I dressed the surface of my 10k. I did a comparison with a freshly lapped surface and dressed surface. The result was quite clear.
However, someone on the Internet said I was making this up:)

I saw a big difference with the dressed surface on all of the Rockstar stones. I think that the freshly lapped surface looses grit as you start honing and the loose grit causes problems. The lapped surface finishes significantly finer.

Here is another pitfall to watch out for. I would have been guilty of not doing this very thoroughly in the past. It backs up the theory that you get a degree of loose slurry in the honing water. It makes sense that you want to flush that away for the finest finish and it would be most pronounced on a freshly lapped stone.

After lapping, I rub the stone down fairly hard with fingers for about 30 seconds and rinse several times in order to clear the slurry. Even after that, when I start honing the water on top of the stone not infrequently comes up a bit cloudy. So think you are on to something.

Did a side by side shoot out between the SG 10k and the RS 10k.

Both stones were lapped with the Shapton Glass Diamond Plate and dressed with the G7 0.85. They were then given a scrub with the Chux Magic Eraser. Honing was done at the sink under a trickle of running water. Swarf was cleared regularly with the Magic Eraser.

The progression was RS 4K > GS 4K HC > 10k

Honing under running water made a huge difference to both stones. I believe that I am now much closer to unlocking their full potential. Surface prep and clearing loose grit makes a big difference to their performance.

There is really not much between these stones. I’d have to give a slight edge to the Glass Stone today. There were no deep scratches at all on the Glass Stone and the bevel which was pretty much mirror. The Rockstar had one or two deep scratches. This could have been luck of the draw. I’d have to go again to confirm it as a pattern. Both edges were superbly sharp.

I did some finishing work on my new CaNAT or is it CnNAT? Canadian natural stone😊

I have a couple of Canadian stones now, with 2 more on the way, but they are stuck in the Canadian postal strike. The two I have on hand now, the Invicta and the Lochinvar seem to be a bit slow, but I need more time with them to know for sure. So far though, they do leave a fairly sharp clean edge, but I don't think they match my surgical Ark yet. I'll be shaving in a bit with my Wheatsheaf razor and see how it feels.

Prima solingen re-scaled with vintage nude woman scales. Honed 1k-4k on synthetic stones, then on Schwedenstein with slurry,
dilute with water until no slurry. Finished on Blue-green thuringian by running water technique. Stropped on cotton and leather. It is shaving as charm.
