What's new

What Are Your Favorite Song Lyrics?

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter; never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Here's one for those of us with acquisition disorders. Keeps it in perspective for me. I don't acquire any less, just keeps it in perspective :tongue_sm

The big man ain't so big no more
He's curled up on the basement floor
His worldly goods around his feet
He's lost his mind trying to keep
The more you gain, the more you pray
Nobody comes to take it all away

"My Girl" by The Temptations;

"I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.

I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got so much honey the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.

I don't need no money, fortune or fame.
I've got all the riches, baby, one man can claim.

Well, I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
With my girl.
I've even got the month of May
With my girl
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
Talkin' 'bout
My girl
Ooooh
My girl
As long as I can talk about my girl"...

I just heard the news
Everyone's talking: Life is good!
'Cause everything's awesome
Awesome jobs and new opportunity
More free time for my awesome community
I feel more awesome than an awesome possum
Put my body in chocolate frosting
Three years later I shot the frosting
Smelling like a possum, everything is awesome
Accept to look at new brown shoes
It's awesome to win and it's awesome to lose

Everything is better when we stick together,
Side by side you and I gonna win forever?
Let's party forever
We're the same unlike you, you & me we are workin' in harmony
Everything is Awesome,
Everything is cool when you're part of a team
Everything is Awesome when you're living out a dreams

Everything is Awesome,
Everything is cool when you're part of a team
Everything is Awesome when you're living out a dreams

[Verse: The Lonely Island]
Blue skies, bouncy springs, we just named a few awesome things
A Nobel prize, a piece of string
You know what's awesome? Everything
Dogs with flees, allergies
A book of Greek antiquities
Brand new pants, a very old vest
Awesome items are the best
Things, dogs, clogs, they're awesome
Rocks, clocks, and socks, they're awesome
Figs, and wigs, and twigs, that's awesome
Everything you see or think or say is awesome

Everything is Awesome,
Everything is cool when you're part of a team
Everything is Awesome when you're living out a dreams

"September" by Earth, Wind and Fire;

"Do you remember the
21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away

Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - never was a cloudy day

My thoughts are with you
Holding hands with your heart to see you
Only blue talk and love,
Remember how we knew love was here to stay

Now December found the love that we shared in September.
Only blue talk and love,
Remember the true love we share today

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - never was a cloudy day

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - golden dreams were shiny days"List

Got to love Johnny Cash's Delia's Gone ....

Delia, oh, Delia, Delia all my life
If I hadn't have shot poor Delia, I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
I went up to Memphis and I met Delia there
Found her in her parlor and I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
She was low down and trifling and she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
First time I shot her, I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer but with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
But jailer, oh, jailer, jailer, I can't sleep
'Cause all around my bedside, I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
So if your woman's devilish, you can let her run
Or you can bring her down and do her like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone
Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone

Dylan's Sad-Eyed Lady, Visions of Johanna, Love is Just a Four Letter Word and probably about 20 or more others by him including Desolation Row, come immediately to mind. Certainly a bunch of Leonard Cohen ("For now I need your hidden love. I'm cold as a new razor blade.") Jackson Brown These Days ("These days I sit on cornerstones, and count the time in quartertones to ten . . . .") A fair amount of Guns 'n Roses ("And when your fears subside, and shadows still remain, I know that you can love me when there's no one left to blame"). A lot of Joni Mitchell from Court and Spark and earlier ("it seems like you've gotta give up such a piece of your soul when you give up the chase"). Jesse Winchester, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, and Townes van Zandt ("now you wear you skin like iron, your breath as hard as kerosene") The Dead ("In the book of love's own dream, where all the print is blood, where all the pages are my days").

But the following leaps to my mind, anyway:

Father forgive us for living while all my homies stuck in prison
Barely breathing, believing that the world is a prison
It's like a ghetto we can never leave
A broken rose giving bloom through the cracks of the concrete
So many other things for us to see
Things to be, our history so full of tragedy and misery

To all my homies never made it home
The dead peers I shed tattooed tears for, when I'm alone
Picture us inside a ghetto heaven, a place to rest
Finding peace through this land of stress
In my chest I feel pain coming, sudden storms
Life full of rain, in this game watch for lead thorns

Our unborn never got to grow, never got to see what's next
In this world full of countless threats
I beg God, to make a way for our ghetto kids to breathe
Show a sign, make us all believe

Half a bee, philosophically,
Must, ipso facto, half not be.
But half the bee has got to be
Vis a vis, its entity. D'you see?

But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury?

Singing...

La dee dee, one two three,
Eric the half a bee.
A B C D E F G,
Eric the half a bee.

Is this wretched demi-bee,
Half-asleep upon my knee,
Some freak from a menagerie?
No! It's Eric the half a bee!

Dire Straits, Love over Gold album is full of great guitar, but also some great lyrics.

"Sunrise"

You take away the breath I was keeping for sunrise
You appear and the morning looks drab in my eyes
And then again I'll turn down love
Having seen you again
Once more you'll disappear
My morning put to shame

You take away the breath I was keeping for sunrise
You appear and the morning looks drab in my eyes
And then again I'll turn down love
Having seen you again
Once more you'll disappear
My morning put to shame

Sometimes I fear that this will go on my life through
Each day I spend in an echoed vision of you
And then again I'll turn down love
Remembering your smile
My every day is spent
Thinking of you all the while

The times I've let myself down
My head's spinning 'round
My eyes see only you
The chances I've lost
Opportunities tossed
Away and into the blue

You take away the breath I was keeping for sunrise
You appear and the morning looks drab in my eyes
And then again I'll turn down love
Having seen you again
Then again you'll disappear
My morning put to shame

You know, your mama and your daddy
Saying I'm no good for you
They call me dirty from the alley
Till I don't know what to do
I get so tired of sneakin' around
Just to get to your back door
I crawled past the garbage and
Your mama jumped out, screamin'
"Don't come back no more"
I can't take it
My guitar wants to kill your mama
My guitar wants to kill your mama
My guitar wants to burn your dad
I get real mean when it makes me mad

Later I tried to call you
Your mama told me you weren't there
She told me don't bother to call again
Unless I cut off all my hair
I get so tired of sneakin' around
Just to get to your back door
I crawled past the garbage and
Your mama jumped out, screamin'
"Don't come back no more"
My guitar wants to kill your mama
My guitar wants to kill your mama
My guitar wants to burn your dad
I get real mean when it makes me mad

What a great question. It's hard to beat any one of a dozen Cole Porter tunes (Let's do it;Love for Sale; You're the Top and more) but the greatest blues artists do it over and over again. Many of them are too blue for general consumption and this one by Alberta Hunter sets the standard.

My Handy Man

Now whoever said a good man is hard to find

Positively absolutely sure was blind
Cause I just found the best man that ever was
And here’s just a few of the things that he does.

He shakes my ashes,
Greases my griddle,
Churns my butter,
And he strokes my fiddle,
My man, is such a handy man.

Now he threads my needle,
And he creams my wheat,
Heats my heater,
And he chops my meat (he’s a mess),
My man, is such a handy man.

Now I don’t care if you believe it or not,
He’s a mighty nice man to have around,
Cause when my furnace gets too hot,
He’s right there to turn my damper down,
For everything, that man of mine’s got a scheme
And honey it’s amazing the way he handles my machine
My man, is such a handyman (oh that man is a mess).

He flaps my flapjacks,
Cleans off the table,
Feeds the horses in my stable,
My man, is such a handyman.

And do you know, sometimes he’s up way before dawn,
Busy cleaning the rough edges off my lawn,
My man, is such a handyman.

Now, he never has a single word to say,
While he’s working hard (poor soul),
And I’d give anything if you could see the way,
he handles my front yard.

Now my ice never gets a chance to melt away,
Cause he sees that I get a nice fresh piece everyday,
My man, is such a handyman.

"Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)"

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night

You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for
One as beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

A journey through my life's musical history ...

Weezer - Heart Songs

Gordon Lightfoot sang a song about a boat that sank
In the lake at the break of the morning
A cat named Stevens found a faith he could believe in
And Joan Baez, I never listened to too much jazz
But hippie songs could be heard in our pad
Eddie Rabbitt sang about how much he loved a rainy night
Abba, Devo, Benatar were there the day John Lennon died
Mr. Springsteen said he had a hungry heart
Grover Washington was happy on the day he topped the charts
These are the songs
These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singin'
Quiet Riot got me started with the bangin' of my head
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Slayer taught me how to shred
I gotta admit though, sometimes I would listen to the radio
Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone
Michael Jackson's in the mirror, I've gotta have faith if I wanna see clear
Never gonna give you up, wish me love or wishing well
It takes two to make a thing go right, if the Fresh Prince starts a fight
Don't you worry for too long 'cause you know these are the songs
These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing
Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun
'Til my roommate said, "Come on and put a brand new record on"
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it
Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me
Got together with my bros, in some rehearsal studios
Then we played our first rock show
And watched the fan base start to grow
Signed the deal that gave the dough to make a record of our own
The song come on the radio, now people go, this is the song
These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.

And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's.
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light.

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me.
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can.

And no one called us to the land
And no one crosses there alive.
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun....

Almost everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes,
Inviting and inciting me
To rise.
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning.

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....

You know, this one strikes deep down in me . . . I sit and I ask myself "Am I the rolling stone, or am I going home?"

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away
And forget about everything

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people, but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're trying, you're trying now

Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're crying, you're crying now

Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door, he's got that look on his face
And he asks where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything

He's got this dream about buying some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down in some quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always keep moving
You know he's never gonna stop moving
'Cause he's rolling, he's the rolling stone

And when you wake up, it's a new morning
The sun is shining, it's a new morning
But you're going, you're going home
