It's the law of diminishing returns. The more you pay the degree of quality increase is inversely proportional to the additional amount of money you pay. Also just the name alone is enough to justify a huge price increase.

They are luxury items and there is no justifying the price. It costs what it does and if you want it you gladly pay for it and when you get it all the prestige that goes with the name is then yours.-Har Har

I don't know, the only DE I have are Superspeed or Techs.

I usually pay for good stuff that is well made and will last, but stay away from the luxury stuff. I pay as long as I see what I pay for. Not judging you guys.

sometimes when you get really involved with the guts of a watch, it is like having a hemi in a timex...you may be scoffed at having a cheaper watch...

back in the 50's a particular Gruen model had the same movement as the Rolex....the Gruen sold for alot less back then, too.

Sometimes you windup buying a Porsche with a Pinto engine....all that glitters is not gold.

Here are mine (not my pics) - Rolex Seadweller, Panerai 312, Heuer Autavia Viceroy, Omega Seamaster, Marathon TSAR, and an Elgin A-11 (not pictured).

Okay, here's a noob question: What does a Rolex or Omega watch have that <1000$ (or even <500) watches don't have? I just don't get it.
That depends if you purchase a piece of precision craftsmanship and engineering indicated by the word "automatic" on good watches in the mid to upper end of market.

Or if you are a marketing wet dream and pay an exorbitant four figure sum for standard high street watch with some pretty designer name and logo.

Like paying for a Ferrari but getting the chassis with fiat engine.

Most of the better known high end watch manufactures sell both so be careful!

Old Omega Seamasters here... My Submariner 1970 model rarely gets worn... The old Omega's are too good not to get wrist time

i wish i hadnt sold my marathon, it was one of my favorites, i just couldnt stand the rubber strap,

ok, as for the question of what makes the price differance,
the thing is, ETAsa makes the same movements to different specs, usualy a normal, a premium and a chronometre grade, the materials used, the adjustment points and the finish of the parts varies in quality, dont get me wrong, you can get lucky and get a standart 2824-2 that gets you chronometre results, but it would be more to do with luck then skill, the price differance is in fine tunning, plus, higher end watch makers that use the same movement usualy replace parts, like omega replaces the escapement with their licenced coaxial escapment which also changes the rythem of the watch (from 28,800 BPH to 25,200), so depending how much you spend, the more polished and tuned the mechanics are, but then again, other watches, omega being also a prime example use the brand to inflate price and are usualy over priced, entery level omegas are imfamous these days for poor quality,

now there are special cases, rolex is a prime example, it is rumored that around 90% of rolexes profits go in to brand maintenance, buying old stock, removing cheap 2nd hand watches from markets, providing basic repurches prices, this has allowed rolex watches to achive a currency status, if i was forced by work or other circumstances to fly around alot, and travel at the drop of a hat, i would be wearing a rolex, its one of the few items that exist today that in an emegency you could trade for food, shelter, travel or cash with no major problems, its basicly a small emergency fund on your wrist,

I have a few nice watches but have never really had the budget to get a fully fledged WAD.

The watch I wear day to day is a Seamaster Pro.

For my next watch I am still deciding between a Marathon or a CWC divers watch.

I too have the sickness although at this stage in my life I find I rarely buy anything but instead budget for periodic maintainance instead :)

This is my new Orient Mako. i placed it on the NATO band for everyday use.

Been a week so far and I haven't had any complaints. Later this week I'll try and figure out the time deviation of this solidly built piece.
