Finally found this cleaning up last night. This was the Seiko wristwatch given to my late Dad for fifteen years at the job he was at, shortly before he retired. Going out to the local jeweler at lunch today to get it battery matched and put right. A little rough but then Daddy wore it everywhere, for everything. That doesn't bother me--I'm just glad to have it.
The jeweler looked at it, and unfortunately it wasn't primarily a dead battery situation. Originally Daddy had let the battery die in the watch, and sat it aside because he couldn't get it open easily. Apparently the battery leaked slightly, and damaged the movement coil, which needs to be replaced.
Fortunately, the guy only quoted me $60 to open up the movement, clean it up and install the new part. I can't argue with that. It'll be January before he has an appointment open but hey, local and can get it done and guaranteed. I'll be happy to pay that much to have it going.
