What's new

Vintage Yardley

I picked up a NOS refill of Old Spice the other day, and immediately I opened to use. I had a NOS kit of Yardley with AS, Shave Soap, and Talc... I immediately opened it to use... There's no middle ground here :001_tt2:

Well, at least you have enough stock to afford that decision!

Sadly it is the middle ground that I am looking for. With old Old Spice I got a partially used puck in a mug that I scraped clean and it is now in my regular rotation. I just sprinkle it with some Shulton OS after shave to pretend it still has a scent. I have a second partially used puck in reserve for use too! So my NOS boxed Old Spice mug (with the wood veneer exterior) can sit unused on the shelf. With the Yardley soap there is only the one.:mad3:

Still, I am in no rush to decide what to do. This soap has waited for over 50 years to end up here so a year or two more won't render it rancid. However the best answer is to buy an already used puck for rotation use!

Nice Paul. Where did you find that kit? I'm with you by the way, open that stuff up and use it.

...and I forgot to mention - if either of you, Mr. Scruffy & herr heirkb want to give up your Yardleys... well, you know where to find me!

I have a question for you --- did you find something you like better than Yardley? The reason I ask is because there is someone "bythebook" selling some Yardleys and other goodies on everyone's favorite auction site. I have two Yardleys that I'm thinking of using in regular rotation with my other soaps, and am wondering if they are truly as good as you and some other guys have described them as being. Are there better current production soaps out there?

Vintage Yardley is great stuff, but the vast majority of the soaps circulating have lost their scent, so you're pretty much lathering up some excellent unscented soap. Is there better stuff currently being made? Probably not better, but outstanding lathers can be had from the likes of AoS, Valobra stick, Tabac, etc. Personally, I would just use the stuff. It is the things like Pen's tallow first English Fern that has an outstanding lather and intact, awesome scent that I will use sparingly.

Ehh, I found AOS to lather better than the vintage Yardley and Wrisley I once owned. Plus I enjoy the scents of new stuff. For the prices Yardley and the likes bring, they are no better than a lot of current production stuff. YMMV and all...

hahahhaaha

I love vintage shaving soaps, Yardley among the best in my opinion - but it occurred to me that I don't need... quite so many bowls backing up the one I have in rotation. I'm certainly not abandoning vintage Yardley (or any of the others) - despite Marco's (and Italianbarber.com's) best efforts to convert me to Italian soaps.

Yardley is wonderful soap - and there is a certain cool factor to using vintage stuff. Razors. Brushes. Fragrances. And shaving soaps.

I would never claim that many modern soaps (and creams) aren't as good as Yardley. (I'm trying them ALL, it seems - and haven't found many really bad ones, to be honest....)

But Yardley is very cool.

I have a lot of vintage stuff - and I use it all... with the exception of this one :

I can't believe how low that lot just went for. I'm actually trying to avoid all vintage stuff and just sold off my Yardley/Wrisley's as well. I actually had a $55 snipe on that lot, just in case and can't believe it only went for a little higher.

Man how the market has dropped on yardley...
