Vintage Scuttle info (Jlmenau)

Anyone have any info on this Jlmenau (Ilmenau) scuttle? Picked this up on eBay and can only decipher that it’s probably 1934-1949 Germany. I could find no other manufacturer info about it. Thought it was interesting with the little soap pegs.

The porcelain mark is quite helpful. Manufacturer is Ilmenauer Porzellanfabrik Graf von Henneberg AG. That mark was indeed used between 1930-1949 after which the company was renamed VEB Henneberg Porzellan Ilmenau on account of the founding of the German Democratic Republic. VEB means Volkseigener Betrieb (People‘s owned enterprise). The manufacturer was renamed after the fall of the wall a few more times. The manufacturer history can be found here.

A great purchase!! Would love to have something like this in my den, but my arthritic fingers and a hard tile bathroom floor would make for a potential crash.

Would the „Germany“ print point to 1930-36 or didn‘t they change marks to Deutsches Reich later on?

It seems that Ilmenau / Jlmenau never used „Deutsches Reich“ on their marks. They started in 1903 to use „Germany“ on some, but not all, of their marks. From then on they used variations of „Germany“, „Made in Germany“, „Made in German Democratic Republic“, or „Made in GDR“. The last three appeared when the company, which is located in Thuringia - then East Germany, was expropriated and turned into a Publicly Owned Enterprise (VEB).

Awesome, y’all rock. I will look at that info and history. I cannot find any other examples of this scuttle online. This had been listed misspelled as “Jilmenau”.

Seems to me these had to be for basic face lathering. I can just coax a big proraso brush in the spout for soaking. And a standard soap puck fits just fine in the top.

I’ll use it till I can’t, then put it on a shelf 👍
Goofy cup might be 100yrs old by then.

It not entirely correct that Jlmenau was misspelled. There’s an explanation about this in the link I posted above. Apparently it was common in the German language to use J instead of capital „i“ when the next letter was a consonant and capital „i“ when the next letter was a vowel. According to this quirky rule, Jlmenau would be the correct spelling. Honestly, as a German I’ve never heard about this rule until I read about it on the link above.
