Ultralight fishing

well enjoy the day
It was not to be, for me...

While we technically did make it to the pond, my wife and daughter hi-jacked the opportunity to opt for a hike instead. All in all was a fantastic hike, my daughter was able to positively ID a Gopher and Garter snake along with some blue-tailed skinks along our trail. Mother was not amused by them - LoL

I'd be lying if I didn't mention how much I was craving some deep-fried brim all along the day

However - Got a call from a buddy on Monday that asked if I wanted some fresh Ahi - so I guess it all worked out in the end :boat:

I have an inexpensive telescopic rod that I can keep in the car, or as a spare if the kid comes and wants her own rod to hold. The only real upgrade was swapping out the terrible line it came with for some braided, with a fluro leader.

Excited about a 7’ Dobyns Sierra U/L (2pc) enroute via Black Friday deal and accumulated points. Going to pair with a Daiwa BG 2000 backed with 8# Izorline XXX

Can‘t wait to chuck some hairjigs next week

Some 14 yeas ago I was fishing with my old guide the estuary part of the Salmon River in NY. Fish were pretty hard to catch this year, so my guide rigged up a Noodle rod with a small float and a 3# fluorocarbon leader, small hook and one single egg.
Took this boy at the second cast, I played it for well over 30 minutes and we were actually able to get him netted and in the boat. Probably around 25/28 lbs. King Salmon. My guide had a bit of rowing to do, especially when the fish ran upstream. I believe this is my most unbelievable fish on such a light leader.

That is awesome Rudy !!
He took you on one helluva ride using 3#

Sometimes when the tuna here get tuned into smaller anchovies, scaling down the leader is the only way to get a larger sardine more lively for them. The kicker is that you never know when a mean green 60 or 80# is gonna take a rip at you on 15lb test - LoL

Well, the noodle rod and the fact we had a lot of space in the wide estuary helped, so could let him run long runs. Wading or standing on the bank of this river, I have dropped to 6#, but then you have a hard time to get them as they run like wild and due to the rocky bottom, often you cannot follow. This river also gets a lot of fishing pressure. One year we fished all the way up and started out getting a fish or two in the early morning, 15#. When the bites dropped, we also dropped the leader, 12#, 10#, 8# and finally 6#. We continued to hook a lot of fish while the other guys did squiddlydud, they never dropped the leader strength and stayed with the 15# all day. The guy next to me finally got it, and as soon he dropped the leader size he hooked fish again.

When I was a kid we went out on the local bay fishing for cod, just using fishing line wrapped around a board -- no rod, no reel, nothing. worked excellent, cost nothing, had very good contact with the lure too, could immediately feel a strike.
Problem is, these days there are no fish because the waters are so polluted due to farming ....!

Today was about 40F. I did a little UL fishing for trout. I caught at least a dozen and released them. I probably hooked and lost twice as many.

I used my a cheap Daiwa combo. I don't remember if I gave 15 or 20 bucks for it 6 or 8 years ago. I like cork handles. They seem to be harder to find these days. I bought a second one as a spare.

Kastmasters flat out work in so many conditions. Those looked fun !!

Yesterday, I started rigging up 16oz glow jigs for Snappers and Lingcod next year. Waiting on Dobyns to ship my rod…

Need to go find me some weak trebles in 2/0 and/or weak splits to handle the same

I started out with a Little Cleo, but a big jumper snapped my line and took the lure. I switched to Castmaster after that. Both catch fish. I think the Little Cleo works a little better, though. I've caught fish with them when nothing else I had worked.

I also uses small minnow plugs in two or three different colors and styles.

Today was freezing rain. I had to scrape the ice off my truck.

I fished with a Berkley light rod I found broken in a trash can. I repaired it. I picked the Shimano reel up at a flea market for 3 bucks. No worries if someone steals it out of my truck....lol.
